You can get trees for $50- and I have some in places where I want them to be in 5-10 years. You can get a better tree for $300, and a nice relatively mature tree could set you back $1000.

Be sure to get him to cough up for a nice tree, not some free sapling that the boyscouts hand out.

Take it one step further and go pick out the tree that you want, who you want to plant it (i.e. an arborist) and that you'll make the arrangements once he gives you the amount of the quote.
