Default Help deciding to get a Hot Tub or not!!

A friend of mine bought a house that came with a 4 person hot tub (about 5 years old). Everything works, has a cover, is insulated and is in good shape. I can do all the prep work, and will get a sparky to hook it up, but am unsure as to the monthly running costs of a tub?
I have heard anywhere from $30 to $100/ month. we will likely use it through the winter (pre heating before use to help keep cost down)
Anyone give any experience here?
Thanks

You'll use it at first, then it will sit there. Ask him why he is selling it.

I have relatives that have said much the same thing. At first you love it and after that the novelty wears off and you wonder why you bought it in the first place.

Not sure about the small ones but I have an 8 person and it costs about $50/month in the winter with the temp up.

Not worth it anymore IMO.

If you stay single the novelty never wears off.

he has a new baby, and never used it much, and can get it in exchange for helping build a deck/outside bar next summer.

I have a friend who uses theirs on a regular basis. That being said, they use it out of routine as a post workout/long day. Theirs is also in their basement which is a bit different than having one outside per se.

No idea on running costs though. Sorry.

I think I've only ever met one person or couple that use theirs regularly, everyone else that has them regrets having them most of the time.

We ran electrical for one but haven't put one in, if I ever got serious I wonder if I could rent a portable one for a while to see if I'd actually use it enough to justify it.

^ what type of electrical do these thing take? Is it a 50 amp plug? Or are they hard wired? Pre-wiring sounds like a good plan

Lol not sure actually, there's just a big wire running from where my panel is to where the hot tub would go, but the wire's just spooled up there so I assume they are hard-wired.

They're a pain in the butt to take care of unless you are using all the time, got rid of mine.

Have had one (7 person tub) for 8 years and still use it regularly. Maintenance is pretty minimal in my mind and I'm pretty lazy. You need to shock it once a week (2 minutes of effort) and possibly add some chemicals 2 or 3 times a week (again, 2 minutes of effort). Need to replace the water 2 to 3 times per year (twice seems to work for us). No idea on the electrical cost.

I'll often use it on my own but I've found with my sons, they'll often open up and we'll have some good conversations.

Had one for about a year and the cost of 50 a month is close. We love ours and still use it all the time. It's great in the winter when it's about minus 15 to sit outside, we used it less in the summer. Only advice I can give for easy maintenance is go with a bromine tablet system. Easy to deal with.

Ditto. They're fantastic and if you maintain them they're no trouble at all.

This post is great.

Have had one for several years, at each of our last three houses as a matter of fact. Use it regularly, and as someone said, moreso in the winter. I am good to about -20, just wear a toque! Kids use it on occasion and have friends over on occasion for a soak & conversation/ cocktails.

I think you should know if you are a 'hot tub person' or not prior to making the commitment. I will always use the tub regularly, but have friends with a tub who hardly ever use it & regret the purchase.

I definitely worry about not using it after a while. Especially if there's nothing to do in there. Usually I have no problem sitting around, but I generally like to play guitar or watch tv while I'm doing nothing. Can't really do that in an outdoor hot tub, can you?

Place in red deer is closing / clearing inventory and I've been debating pulling the trigger lately. Maybe in 3-4 years when the little guy is a bit bigger and can enjoy it too
