Can those of you who have been to http://wingsoverspringbank.com/ before (or predecessors to it) describe what it's like? Do you get to see the planes on the ground up close? Wondering if my young kid would enjoy going since he really likes planes. I went to the Hamilton air show as a kid and loved it, but it seems like it may have been quite a bit bigger.

Really worth going, but all the jets fly out of the international so you'll only see the smaller stuff on static. A lot smaller than hamiltons but still worth attending. Air display is worth it though.

Man, the A340 is an ugly-ass plane. Glad they stopped making 'em

Woah now, I'm not keen on the 200 and 300 series but I think the proportions on the 500 led to a damn near perfect looking plane:

So I golfed Silverwing yesterday for Father's Day. Not the nicest course but great if you are an avgeek because you really get your spotting fill. We managed to time it about as perfect as possible as they were running a north flow for most of the round and we were there in the afternoon. Both AC 777's arrivals right over our heads (those are huge Mo-fo's when they are literally right over top of you) and Edelweiss arrived too. KLM and Transat A330 departures one after the other right when we were at the closest point to 35R too so nice bonus there. And ATC was kind enough to switch to a south flow near the end of our round and the first 777 departed over us again on the way out. And apparently is was special livery day at YYC, WestJet's Frozen 737, AC's retro A319 in TCA colors and United had a retro 'Friendship' A320/A319 departing as well.

Nice day for spotting.

Our Hainan Airlines flight from Beijing today is being operated by a 787-9 in a Kung Fu Panda livery, this one will stick out if you see it. ETA 2:13pm

Tracked the flight all morning from Alaska and in, it was going to be perfect as it looked like they were landing north which would mean an approach right over work so good viewing. Naturally some unexpected stuff came up last minute and I missed it.

Same here. I got a phone call from a client right before I was going to head outside to look

ATC ticked me off too, they gave them runway 35R, not 35L which is nice and close to me at work. So I saw it from a distance instead of right over McCall lake. Dammit ATC, arrivals from the west are supposed to go to 17R/35L.

They also did this with the Air Canada Tokyo flight which is now being operated by the 787-9.

Pretty sure they're doing that for a shorter taxi.

Definitely the case, but it gives spotters absolutely zero consistency for runway assignments. As it is not always done, I've seen the Narita flight use 35L lots of times.

Taxi wouldn't be much longer using 35L would it? A quick look at Google maps ballparks the distances as being pretty close either way. If they re landing south then it's another story however. But yeah, I'd guess that is why they did it.

Thunderbirds flipped a plane on landing in Ohio. Both crew were ok.

Yeah one of the new RJ is here pretty much every day and most of the A321 are painted so they're here multiple times daily. Still only a couple of 787 painted but they've both been here multiple times.
