Might have mixed up players. Maybe it's a closer deal than I thought at first glance.

Looking forward to watching a highly mobile/athletic goalie again instead of just a big guy between the pipes.

Hell of a lot younger too. Very Kiprusoff-esque in style

Smith played in +26 games and faced more than twice as many shots on goal than did Raanta last year. The difference in their SP is 0.08, but Smith played on a team that faced +4 more shots than NYR every night.

Raanta is an unknown commodity; it remains to be seen if he is even a starting goaltender.

So what you are saying is Mike Smith, is just a big guy between the pipes?

Last year, not so much. He seemed more comfortable recovering from his knee issue. Previous years? Yes.

Which isn't a bad thing.. but it's more fun as a fan to watch a guy like Raanta, in my opinion.

Ditto. Smith is another knee injury away from his career being over.

A 7th OA pick is generally a top 6/top 4 player that is going to give your team 7-10 years at a below market contract.

So from that standpoint, it seems like a high acquisition cost for a 6.5m cap hit player who is in (or even past) his prime years and a goalie who hits UFA next year.

That said, Arizona starts to look quite competitive all of a sudden.

Jeez, the 'Yotes are acting like me in the CPHL. Endless deals

Craig Morgan @craigsmorgan 24s25 seconds ago
And still, I do not believe the Coyotes are finished dealing.

If Raanta plays average as a starter - that is if he has a league average save percentage and starts 55+ games - that will be an absolute slam dunk win for them.

Thats one of the few things that the Rangers have had going their way, they've been developing good goalies who get stuck behind Lundquist and then they turn around and turn those goalies into assets.

Must be nice. Bastards.

DeAngelo traded again. I don't think he is well-liked in this league.

Yeah smart moves from the Coyotes IMO

Understand you don't wait until after a players ELCs are over to try to be good - need to win when your young players are on ELCs.

7th overall and DeAngelo isn't a cheap price to pay but it's worth it to get out of a never ending rebuild and for your two most important positions (C & G)

Talbot looked quite a bit better in NYR in his two years there than did Raanta. In a day and age when the trend in goaltending is towards size, there is a pretty big risk here that he will not manage well with a starter's load of games. How many starting goalies under 6'2" are there in the NHL?

For every Talbot there are many guys who don't turn out...until someone proves they are a legit NHL starter they aren't
