He shall forever be remembered for beating up two Canucks at the same time.
He'll be missed!

I figured Engelland would be a Golden Knight anyway. They're in a position to pay him top dollar as well.

Was kind of hoping to have Engelland back as a 6/7 guy but this is better than losing some good young prospects or throwing around picks to hold onto guys. Probably one of the best case scenarios, all things considered.

He was a UFA.
We can still, conceivably sign him on July 1, although there was never and chance of that happening. He was almost assuredly always going to Vegas.

If true, I would think it's good news for re-signing Versteeg and Stone. I wouldn't be surprised if Treliving was waiting to see how expansion would play out before putting pen to paper. You know, to avoid signing them and then having to protect them.

We were never going to resign him anyway so see ya later, if it couldn't be Brouwer this is the next best option.

Tough loss really as he accounted for 50% of our teams total toughness alongside Ferland.
Wouldn't be surprised to see Treliving sign/ trade for some size come July 1

I'm confused instead of taking a prospect like Kulak or Shinkaruk they select an unsigned Derek Engelland who they could have signed on July 1st anyways?
It still is possible that he doesn't work out a deal with them by July 1st and resigns with the flames.. correct?

the real confusion is why any fan would think the Flames lost something in this scenario

If he is actually the pick , yes. According to the Knights owner, they did not sign the 2 UFAs they picked today.

I believe they have early negotiating rights with UFA players so any UFA taken in this draft is not so much "drafted" as they are "signed." They would do this right now rather than wait until July 1 because on July 1 they have 30 other teams to compete with.
EDIT: According to Sureloss above me, no UFA players were signed. So then, yes, he could bolt on July 1.

Probably means he'll be a captain, shows a commitment to Engelland before the whole roster comes together.
The real challenge in Vegas will be to quickly cultivate a working roster. Moves like this are intended to lay that foundation.

Kind of highlight what other teams think of our exposed players. Low value and cannot even give them away...

Maybe they literally did not value anyone else on the Flames and did not want the contract?

Vegas must feel very confident that they will be able to sign the UFAs they selected today.
