A different opinion on Florida.

Reilly Smith is signed to a long horrible deal, 5 years at $5,000,000 and he simply isn't very good. A huge negative value player.

While Marchessault scored 30 goals last year, he's got zero track history, is very small, scored at an unsustainable scoring percentage, and is a UFA after this season. It might be a huge risk to extend his contract today.

Getting out of the Smith contract is huge. Marchessault certainly looks much better on paper than he likely will on the ice going forward.

If they can flip him now for a 1st round pick, they should do it.

There is a good discussion ongoing now on TSN 1040 in Vancouver about McPhee's approach to the expansion draft. Lawrence Gilman—former AGM of the Vancouver Canucks and one of the architects of the expansion draft—is explaining the balance McPhee strove to strike between selecting for position, cap hit, contract status, and with an eye to being both competitive in the short term and building for the future. In his estimation this was an "asset harvest event" from which McPhee made out very well. VGK will be pretty bad this year, but that does not matter in a new market. However, they are quite well positioned to improve quickly, which is the real key to their long-term success.

I'm sad to see Bellemare leave the Flyers. Guy is like Stephane Yelle. Forechecks like crazy, plays their top PK minutes. Also on a cheap contract.
