As much as I want this to happen, wasn't it Dreger who reported Giordano wanted $9M? Or was that Francis?

What a moron.

He said Draisaitl likes Edmonton so much he feels he wouldn't even sign an offer sheet LOL. The 960 guys went silent for a second after.

The difference is the best player (this year) in the NHL.
Gio was far from that.
McDavid will get max and max. Anything less and most will be surprised.

Whispers? Sometimes I wonder how much of an insider Dreger really is. It's pretty clear his annual salary will be in that ballpark. We've been discussing it for the last year. As long as his agent isn't a moron he's going to get close to this.

I love when people say Sid left money on the table. His first contract after his ELC was just short of the max at the time. His 2nd contract was in the middle of his concussion issues and he took a front loaded deal that was 12 years. Signed to 37. His current contract is illegal under the new CBA.
They need to look at Toews, kane and Kopitar as they are the only big names that were still young to sign since the 2nd lockout. If they are at 10 or over hard to believe Mcdavid can't demand at least 12. I thought best case scenario for the Oilers was 11.5 but figured 13. I'm loving 14!! Hope it is for 5 or 6 years too

Big difference is also that Gio and the Flames actually had to negotiate.
Oilers pretty much have to sign whatever McDavid tells them to sign - or else he waits until RFA and gets the Max from 29 other teams.

Sid is also superstitious and is hung up on the number 87. His cap hit has been $8.7 mil since his first contract

Yeah, the only people who are suddenly surprised by this number are delusional and myopic Oilers fans like Mark Spector. I am actually comng to love his radio segments for the comedic relief.

True but at the time if an 8 year max was his only option he would have thrown out the superstition and taken his 12 mil a year for 8 years

I think what really bugs me is how self righteous he is. I mean hey, it's fine to live by the whole "you don't need to be correct as long as you're sure" but he sure is not correct.

I think Sid's second contract is a perfect comparable.
Crosby signed it the summer after his second season in which he won the Art Ross, Lester Pearson (now known as the Ted Lindsey) & Hart. He signed a five year deal for 17.3% of the cap hit at the time according to CapFriendly.
McDavid is in the summer after his second season in which he won the Art Ross, Ted Lindsey & Hart.
If he signs a five year deal for 17.3% of a $75-million cap, it would be $12.975 for five years (for a total of $64.875).
I wouldn't be surprised if he lands about there. He would be taking a bit of a discount, but not the ridiculous amount suggested by some Oiler fans. They are probably starting off asking for $14 million or even more.

McDavid really does have all the leverage. If he goes to RFA next year, every team in the NHL would be willing to offer him max dollars at whatever term he wants. The Oilers are just gonna have match at the time anyways. May as well try to sneak in a couple UFA years in there by enticing him to sign max dollars now.

My guess is 100M/8yrs or 12.5/Yr
Anything less is a win for Edmonton

I can't see McDavid giving up 4 years of UFA for only 12.5/yr. Even at 14M per year, I can only see him giving them 2 years of UFA max.

He literally just won an award where the other players voted that he's the best player in the league... and he's still not legally old enough to buy a beer in the US.
There's really no argument that can be made that he doesn't deserve to be the highest-paid player in the league.
The fact is, if he signs for less than $15 million per season, he's leaving money on the table.
