I don't think the oilers have the internal strength to not spend to the cap, looking at their lineup.

there's no way that he's taking a paycut, especially since he had a decent playoff and regular season, and the Oiler are going to desperately need him.
He'll probably get 3.8 to 4 right now on a market where defensemen just aren't available in free agency.

I don't think he earned a "raise" and you usually pay more for a 1 year deal, hence him signing long term for around $3 million.

Come on 4 x 4. I suspect he gets a 4yr x 3mil especially with 7-8 extra spots this year.

Russell has turned that amount down before, after worse years.

There's no way he signs with the Oilers for $3 million per season. The Flames would gladly replace Engelland's salary with essentially the same for Russell and I think Russell's camp knows this as the Flames tried to make something work with him last season but just couldn't free up the room. This season they have both Wideman and Engelland coming off the books. If the Oilers low ball him like that he will simply go to free agency and if that's the case I wouldn't rule out the Flames signing him for better or worse.

Of course the Edmonton media finds ways to make the Penguins' championship victory about the Oilers.

He did the same thing when the Cubs won the World Series. He's a great white whale, "Thar he blows... hard!!"... Stauffer the chief prostitute of the Oiler bureau of Propaganda.

Remember that guy who did absolutely nothing for the Oilers but now has both ears stuffed with Cup Rings?
Remember him?
Its because the Oilers are No Good. One can become Good simply by leaving them.
Its funny, if you look at his stats they are night and day, guess what the common denominator is? I'll give you a hint: Its Edmonton.

What was his record in the playoffs with Edmonton? I cant remember?
On the flipside though, Connor McJesus just got a huge kick in the nuts to be the best player ever. He has to repeat Cup wins and Conn Smythes at the same time.
Come on Connor! Whats the holdup??

Oh my god is that ever lame. Is there any doubt that Oilers media is the worst in all of sports? They should at the very least strive for some small shred of professionalism if only to separate them from their fans.

Oilers media and fans putting massive pressure on the team is a good thing. This season they had no pressure, now anything less than the west final is a failure.

Here's a photo of Connor McNextone during the Oilers post game interview after losing to the Ducks.
