People want Uber because of availability, plain and simple.
In the inner city, I haven't had too many instances where I've been stranded waiting a cab. But if I'm anywhere outside of the inner city, the chances are slim to nil in getting one. I've also heard horror stories of friends who've managed to hail a cab, then get denied service because the ride was too far away. What can one do in that situation? Nothing...
I never rely on cabs to get me home, even when I'm in the cab hotspots. Rather than relying on a cab, I either plan to walk, stay over, rely on a DD, or just not keep the alcohol consumption to a minimum.

they already do something as sneaky to catch the out of town taxi taxi's picking up in Calgary.
under livery bylaw- unregulated vehicles aren't allowed to pickup any fares in Calgary even if the trip is provided by the chestermere taxi company taking chestermere residents home from the flames game or airport)
Without moving away from the topic at hand, it's sad to see Nenshi's statements. I voted for him thinking he might be a different politician, bring new ideas to city council. However, he has been at worst, ineffective, and at best irrelevant.
Don't want to see this dragged on forever, Uber is a great service, and I plan to use it this week to support them.
Let's be fair to the mayor here. There is literally no other message that any ayor of this city could have said. You really think that the city is going to go ahead and say - "Go ahead and ride along with unlicensed and underinsured drivers, dont worry about possible legal issues that could come out of it!" ?
As the mayor's statement says, they are working on it. Uber's not going to get very far in actually getting governmental approval without requiring drivers to have commercial insurance and driver's licenses that allow "for hire" driving (Class 4)
There's good reason why the city cannot simply allow Uber to operate.
Uber's minimum charge is $5. So if I hail a Uber car to go from Brentwood to Brentwood Safeway for $5, will the Uber driver give me the dirty look? That's the problem I have with the current taxi system, they hate the extreme short haul fares.

It'll probably depend on how far the driver was when they got pinged. Though for a $5 fare, the driver is probably only getting ($5 - $1.85 safe rider fee) * 0.8 or barely 50% of the fare.

I doubt it. I've had nothing but pleasant experiences with uber drivers.
This is absolute horse crap. Some of the absolute worst drivers on the road are cabbies. I have always wondered how someone who drives for a living can suck so hard at the primary skill of their employment. Like worse than 14 year old learners permit holders. A huge portion of cabbies come here with little or know driving experience, and are bribing some unknown driving school instructor to get a pass. This is fact. Most cabbies are brutally bad drivers.
With a Calgary Taxi, you are paying T-bone prices for a frikking piece of bologna.
I am not advocating to pay Taxi because they provide great service. I am saying if consumers want quality choices they should support those companies that offer quality and not insist they compete on price with lowest common denominator!

Well that is what people are complaining about. We are not getting a choice right now. The cab cartel is the only choice given to us.
How would your insurance know you were carrying someone for Uber?
If you got in an accident and exchanged info with someone how would they ever know your passenger was an Uber fare?
If it was a simple fender bender with no injuries they may not (unless the passenger had to provide a witness statement), but if it was a serious accident with injuries and such it would be pretty easy to find out.
