I'd be looking forward to the Oiler apogist spinning this one ...

A fair contract for Leon Draisaitl? Eight years at $7.0 million per year.

A generous contract? Eight years at $7.5 million.

A very generous contract? Eight years at $7.8 million.

I'm with you. I still think Draisaitl had an inflated year last year playing with McDavid, and guy will come back down to earth a bit this upcoming season now that the pressure is on. I guess I could be wrong, but the memory of his dreadful first year is still lingering for me.

The Oilers will find a way. If they can come up with 6 Giordanos they can probably come up with 2 or 3 McDavids.

Oilers still have brutal defensive depth as well after Klefbom and Larsson(and I don't think either of them are true #1s. Klefbom maybe could get to that point as a lowerish end #1)

In a vacuum, he's only worth that money and term if he's had a second season like the past one. Not nearly enough of a sample size to open the bank like that . He's a decent player and had that top 10 potential, but really left the Oilers no choice, but didn't show a lot in his first or second season thet makes one think that he's the 1b threat ala Malkin or Toews that Oiler fans and the slobbering media will yell to whoever will listen.

Welcome to cap hell with another set of slug defenseman which is all they can afford. Talbot is going to see a lot of pucks again, and coincidentally, he's the one that has to be paid next, and is worth more than Draisital.

Remember that Sekera is gone until Jan of this year.

that defense could be atrocious, as it stands Talbot really covered for them last year by saving a lot of This guy scored moments.

I guess the agent wins.

I dont know. I do find some to be way out there but in fairness I expected that we'd have to pay Monahan and Gaudreau a lot more than we currently do. Their contracts came in way under what I would have expected.

You can almost afford a Draisaitl with that type of cap difference.

(AP) The Toronto Maple Leafs released a statement after the Oilers signed Leon Draisaitl to a long term 8.5 million per year contract. The Statement simply reads "Thanks man, thanks a lot"

In a salary cap world, it makes sense to pay your best players the most money, instead of giving veterans a compensation package for things they've done in the past.

Staples failed as the management mouthpiece. Thst column has hints of Lowe's theories throughout, too.

Full steam ahead now on the unlimited ceiling for the Oilers hype in the press for the next 2 months. Larson and Klef will be desperately talked up as the next Nidermeyer, in hopes of instilling false confidence in them.

Their window will always be open as long as McDavid is on there along with Talbot backpacking the rest of the team. The question is how well they can execute as long as they have those players.

I think GM's are becoming more desperate. Few GM's seem to be willing to stand their ground and truth be told most realize they won't be around on the tail half of these long term deals so they are willing to look the other way when handing out these massive 7/8 year deals.

Just look at what the Oilers are paying their top players now and how little room the have to supplement their small core of players. We are talking about a team that is coming off their first playoff appearance in 11 years and they are throwing around money like a team that has reached their goals of winning a cup. It's kind of crazy what they are doing given plenty of teams have regressed after a coming out season.

In a decent decent for all players you'd get probably 30-35 more points out of the Edmonton duo. $8 million for that difference. Wow...

I guess that's the premium you pay just to have a superstar name on your team. Poor suckers.

I'm liking the Flames chances at having a more well rounded and deeper team over the next number of years. And it's already no competition on defense.

With McDavid entering his prime years (mid 20s) after the next two seasons - its hard to understand how their window will close then. Its OK to pretend he isn't going to be able to lift a team close to a championship, but in all likelihood that is what he is going to do. Its back to the the 1980s for the BOA. Can the Flames assemble an all-around better line up to beat the Oilers who have the best player in the NHL. Game on.
