The date was easier to use on nhl.com but I went back and got the first 10 games for each season

14-15: 5-4-1, then 10-4-1 to Nov 30
15-16: 2-7-1, then 6-7-1 to Nov 30
16-17: 4-5-1, then 7-8-1 to Nov 30

One bad start, two mediocre/average starts.

Thanks. I'd say 4-5-1 is pretty bad too.

was looking at the PTO options for a left shooting dman and it's pretty slim pickings, certainly suggesting Kulak or Wotherspoon seem to have the inside track.

Mark Stuart or Francois Beauchemin

Well sure. When the team goes through 4-5-1 stretch around here, every player sucks except for the backup goalie and a player or two on the fourth line, the coach and GM need to be fired, the whole organization needs to be burned down, and so on.

One good start, one bad start, one mediocre/average start.
11-13-2 is not a mediocre start. League average is in the .540 to .550 range and a .462 winning percentage will give you a lottery pick.

What you presented is one good start, one bad start, and one disastrous start.

I would even go so far as to argue that teams that start under .500 in the first ten games are likely to miss the playoffs.

And because of loser points .500 doesn't even mean .500. Really you need to be about .540 to be average.

Perhaps the words I used to describe the starts betrays a lack of objectivity. I've looked up the starts for both 10 games and for Nov 30 for all three seasons again, combined with the Flames' rank in the Western Conference at the time.

14-15: 5-4-1 (T-6th), then 10-4-1 to Nov 30 (5th)
15-16: 2-7-1 (T-12th), then 6-7-1 to Nov 30 (14th)
16-17: 4-5-1 (6th), then 7-8-1 to Nov 30 (10th)
