The writer would stop being jealous of West Ed if he actually lived there. Only tourists, teens, and scuzzy types go to West Ed. It was cool to me until I moved there, it's amazing how much you stay away from massive tourist traps like that once you move to said city.

1. The bolded part is untrue. Many, many families and shoppers got to West Ed. Don't kid yourself.
2. It's the hipster thing to "avoid tourist traps" in their own city and disparage them. That isn't specifically limited to Edmonton. And even then, it's because locals have likely seen them before and don't need to go again, not because of a conscious effort to avoid tourists, teens, and scuzzy types.

I have never heard the term Festival City in reference to Edmonton.
That article screams Winnipeg to me... "Look at us! Take us seriously. Please."

There is a tonne of tourist propaganda on that site, but perhaps even more hilarious than the Edmonton article about the amazing mall and the 10-hour drive to see Bison in their natural habitat is the fact that there are no articles about Winnipeg.
...because what could anyone even make up to convince tourists to come and visit Winnipeg?

Every time I have had in Winnipeg has been better than any time I have had in Edmonton.

That was probably in the job description when he was commissioned.
Its almost like people dont understand that desperate cries for attention tend to backfire.

Have to agree with that. I lived there for a few months and really liked it. Although those months were May-August so...

So, "Come to Winnipeg: You'll have a better time here than in Edmonton!"
Yeah, that is far from a convincing sales pitch.

And yet still an attractive sales pitch compared to Mulletville.

Fringe, folkfest, street performers... yeah I agree.
I'm a Calgarian by birth and a Flames fan since day one but some of the stuff posted on here about Edmonton is nonsense.
Calgary has one huge two week bender. Edmonton has festival after festival that draw guests and talent from all over. it's pretty cool. And Edmonton gets the 'A' tour concerts because of the venues...something Calgary can't boast.
Still the oilers suck....so hard.
On another note, I saw McJesus at Pearson airport last Friday on my way home. Dude needs to hit the gym.

While I might agree with you about the festivals being great, remember the over-riding theme of this thread: E = NG. This isn't the appropriate place to be putting out compliments.

Two things Can't believe some Edmontonians still look at you straight faced and boast about the West Edmonton Mall. It's a giant mall, congratulations. I wish Calgary had a giant water park but that's about the only cool thing about it. Most people avoid Chinook and Market as it is, I'm not seeking out a bigger center.
The Days of Edmonton being festival city are long gone, in the 90s but no longer. The two big ones for either city are Stampede and Klondike er Capital Ex, er K-Days but Stampede attendance of 1.2m stands at 50% more then K-days of 800k. I would also suggest nothing takes over a city, like it or hate it, as much as Stampede. Any Canadian city worth it's salt get revved up for the summers nowadays.
Beyond that I'm struggling to think of some great festivals Edmonton has that Calgary doesn't. "Taste of" was much better in Edmonton but Calgary's is huge now, it was teeny even five years ago. Every weekend in Calgary you can find multiple festivals and events to attend, some more interesting then others.
Actually Edmonton as the Sour Dough races which are a lot of fun! Edmonton's wider deeper river valley lend itself to that sort of thing. Personally I'll still take the Bow River though. The Bow being so accessible, with Prince Island and now St Patricks Island, the beautiful river walk, it beats about Edmonton's gorgeous river valley in my opinion. (not like the bow isn't beautiful)
My thoughts. Edmonton Sucks sorry kill_carlson

Edmonton Folk Fest, and the Fringe are world class festivals. Heritage Days is a great multicultural festival too.
