Theft only makes prices go even higher? It's literally making inflation worse if anything.

You're response doesn't really make sense to his post? He wasn't claiming theft doesn't make things worse at all. He was suggesting that capitalism and company greed are driving us off a cliff right now and they will continue to do so, and as long as they do so theft will likely be the least of our societies problems as we are destroyed by the rich.

I was in Dick's last month in Minneapolis. Their prices are no cheaper than what we pay here.

Absolute garbage humans who do these types of crimes and we let them get away with it. They don't try these types of invasion style robberies to the same extent in mom and pop stores for FEAR of being physically hurt with a weapon or more.
People would be shocked and amazed at how quickly these crimes are reduced to a smaller level with serious physical punishment being dolled out. You think these losers would have tried these things at luxury stores when the mob ran Vegas? Anybody who has seen the movie Casino knows the famous scene of breaking the guy's hand and sending a message.
I am FULLY on board with this perps being given the old Singapore style caning that results in pain that can not even be described nor believed. Now with social media, we can broadcast fully to everybody and we can reduce this type of behavior.
Fear of pain and fear or repercussions of physical harm send powerful messages. No different than NHL style enforcers. A message is sent and people follow the rules just a little bit better.

You're right, crime was never a problem in Vegas while the Mob was it

My dad had O'Henry bars going missing at the store in Banff one summer. He finally had enough and setup a camera pointing at the candy rack. We always had the door propped open a few inches for cooling in the summer. Well it turns out a squirrel used that entry every day to go help himself to an O'Henry bar.

Theft or no theft, prices are going up because of corporate greed. It’s just an excuse to raise prices even more. The system is fundamentally broken.

what a stupid take.
You took a complex problem and reduced it to people needing to get beaten, and that will solve the problem.
Know what? I'm at the point where I'm not made angry by theft from a store that makes billions in profit, and sometimes I'm at the point where I've considered some low level theft myself.
I'm disgusted at myself for the thought but shame can be trumped by need. If I did steal, know what wouldn't deter me from doing it again? being beaten. you beating me wouldn't feed my family or take away any of my desperation. you'd just help to make me a harder person and strip more of my guilt and decency away.
I might as well start calling you Javert if I'm being literary. we just need to beat people to the point of crippling them.. I think you'd be shocked of how little that would deter people. Hell, you'd be lucky to catch a 10th of the thieves to beat them in the first place. but you put on your brown shirt and have at 'er.

Yup, just another tactic of keeping the poor people fighting amongst themselves because it’s all their fault…

They’re probably not “garbage people.” Maybe some are. Maybe some ended up where they are because the alternative is a whole lot worse. Stealing is whatever, just don’t hurt anyone on your way out.
If you want to be the one beating someone half to death because they stole from Walmart, however, you’re definitely a garbage person. Your post sounds idiotic.

Seems as though we’d have quite a few beaten and dead people around here if some got their way.

I guess I’m somewhere in the middle here. Stealing is NOT “whatever”. Don’t steal, it’s not right, but probably doesn’t deserve a lashing.

I want no one beaten for stealing from my store. It is however, incredibly frustrating when two dudes in their early twenties casually grab $600 worth of fragrances and walk out at normal speed despite being asked to put it back or pay for it because they know we have a no pursuit policy. Literally my manager told them to stop and they just laughed and said no. Or the girl who ran in with a garbage bag, filled it with $800 of razor blades and ran out. There needs to be something we can do. Most of the stolen stuff is resold online, it's not that these people are just down on their luck.
It costs $50,000 to have a security guard and that isn't going to drop my theft by more than maybe $15,000.
On the flip side, one of the top 5 most shoplifted items in most retailers who carry it is baby food. The margins are usually around 5% or less, so it's not like the retailers are ripping people off but that's clearly an affordability issue. I caught a 70 year old lady who was a long time customer stealing toothpaste. That's heartbreaking, because I know it's that she couldn't afford it. We simply can't deny this is a complex issue.
Maybe treat it like drugs in that resale of stolen goods carries higher punishments?

It’s already against the law, what more do you want?
What do you expect any retail worker to do about it?
Like it or not, it’s “whatever.” If it wasn’t, police would take it more seriously. Malls would be properly staffed with security. People wouldn’t just watch something that preventable happen.

I mean, I guess we're talking about semantics here, but I'll just start taking 2-5% of your money and call it whatever? Not every business is Walmart. Here in Salmon Arm about 80% of the retail stores are not big corporations and they're feeling the same issue.
If it was constant, it would suck and just be the cost of doing business. It was that easy for a long time. The issue is that it's growing and fast. That's going to destroy A Touch A Texas in the mall beside me before it'll destroy me. Is that "whatever"?

I guess some people suck. Some people’s attitudes toward theft suck too. People should be teaching their kids that theft isn’t “whatever”. It’s wrong. Period.

I've been a parent for 20 years.
I've met lots of parents.
I've yet to meet one that teaches their kids that theft is "whatever".
Sometimes kids veer away from how their parents have tried to raise them.

I agree with you. I haven’t met a parent that teaches their kids theft is “whatever”. However they do exist, unfortunately.

Ahh wherever. It’s just theft. Not a big deal.

Do you want to live in San Francisco? Because pretending rampant theft isnt a problem is how you wind up living in San Francisco
