It is a fresh start for him and having former QB Scott Milanovich as a head coach and Marcus Brady as an OC will do him good. Besides I would rather have Drew Tate as a backup and insurance QB for the Stamps.
I agree with corporatejay, Tate decided to stay with the Stamps knowing he might not get some playing time because he is planning on being a coach someday and he figured Hufnagel, Dickenson will help him learn that trade.

Willy is only two years younger. That's a year for each use of the word much.

Calgary needs to keep Tate. If there's any lesson the CFL has taught teams in the past few years, it's that losing your starting QB and not having a reliable backup is a disaster.
While Tate is probably not thrilled at being a long-term backup QB, he has to know he's only one play away from taking over. Not a happy thought, but it's very good organizational thinking by the Stamps. You can never have too much depth at QB.

Don't want to change the topic, but I'm really pleased with the addition of Bakari Grant this year. Great all-around receiver, reliable, doesn't shy away from tough spots. Wonder if Hamilton doesn't regret letting him go.

If Tate wanted to be a starter he would have signed with another team in the off-season. He's obviously fine being a backup and getting a decent payday. He will probably be done after this season and begin his college coaching career next year.

Yeah the whole Tate thing is kinda bizarre. What was that, like 4 years ago now when he looked like the heir apparent to Burris? Had a Bo-esque start to his career too, in terms of the W/L record. He seems like a natural leader in the huddle too, and quite a fiery personality in there. Doesn't seem like the type of person just content with being a backup for life, but evidently he is. Just an odd situation there

The only thing I'll say is that Tate is a VERY odd guy. Not your typical athlete.

I also wonder how a couple of concussions change you.
Saw it with Cornish who never really was the same and walked away. Maybe Tate is happy to be the back up after the concussions he suffered.
Tate gets to be a backup, doesn't have to worry about concussions as much, but still gets to be on the team (probably learn a lot about coaching has backup QB), and gets a pay day.
Worse ways to earn a buck that's for sure.

I thought I read a few months earlier that Drew was looking to land a QB coaching job with the Iowa Hawkeyes:

Sounds like he's preparing for life after his playing days are over.

I will always be appreciative of Taylor Reed for that block in the back in the final minute of the 2014 Grey Cup.

Hard business. Reed's played well when healthy but Singleton forced the decision. Playing so well and just has way too much potential to not start him going forward.

Calgary is lucky to have Tate. Trading him would be a terrible move. Like someone else said if he wanted playing time he would've signed elsewhere

yeah the coaching angle on Tate helps to explain what I thought was a strange bit on this team. Thanks.

I'm not sure who is responsible for it, but its quite amazing and impressive how the Stamps can always seem to find WR and OL. They are deep all around but it just seems not matter who they lose at those 2 spots they find someone else.
I'm a big fan of Daniels so far. I think this guy has the potential to be their next big star receiver.

I've watched a lot of Stampeder football since the 1970s, and this 2016 team has to be one of the best I've seen. I do remember there was a year in the early 1990s when the Stamps started the year 10-0 - I think it was Flutie's first year here. Reminds me of then. Its not just the win-loss record though - these guys are dialed in on all aspects of the game.

Looks like Joe West will finally be back in the lineup again. I hope he plays well enough to give the coaching staff another headache when Grant gets off the 6-games injury list. It is every team's dream to have this type of problem trying to insert a veteran player back in the lineup.
