Mason is as average as average gets. Would rather take my chances with smith for 2 years

Who's going to give Chad Johnson starters money? Likely no one. He may not have very many contract offers come July 1st

Yeah but even Dreger also tweeted that it is possible for Johnson to come back to Calgary, suggesting whoever they are talking to in Calgary is feeding them that information.

Yeah Steve Mason is not very good.
If MAF was not available to CGY, then Smith or Raanta are your two best options.

I know a lot of posters around here were high on Hickey, but he wasn't progressing as much as hoped in the NCAA. His development has been relatively flat compared with other prosepcts. We'll see I guess, but I think he tops out as a bottom pair guy.

Well with Smith making $5.6 million it's not likely the Flames will have much money to offer Johnson in a backup role.

Just saying, it would be better if there was a games played component added to that condition.

Exactly, if Smith plays 50 games and the flames make the playoffs or an amount of wins

Smith is a $4.25M cap hit with the salary retention.

Well they will be better if the starting goalie shows up prior to January and doesn't go on holidays again in April/May.
Your solution is to lockup a ufa goalie that is similar stat wise however worse in the playoffs? How can you say that would go any better aside from having him signed longer than smith?

And reportedly the asking price for Raanta is very high.

Yeah this is much better than having to go UFA and give a guy like Mason a 3+ year deal for sure. That would have been worst case scenario.
