I'm not giving up on Cervenka yet but after 14 games you would think he would be pretty close to game shape. He's had a lot of chances in games and getting chances tells me he's being somewhat effective. He certainly looks a little soft (I remember us all talking about how soft Pavel Datsyuk was when he broke into the league and when the Flames beat the Wings in 2004 and it takes time for some of these Euros and you need to be patient with them) and seems to be the poster boy for what currently ails the head coach. We can only hope that next time he gets into the lineup he is more effective but it's simply not going to happen if Hartley continues to place him on the 4th line. Hartley is kind of hard to read. He's got to assume he's got a least a couple of seasons before the Flames ownership considers letting him go yet he's coaching like he's coaching for his job making some desperation type moves. At the beginning of the season we all thought for the Flames to make the playoffs certain players would have to have rebound years and Cervenka and Hudler would have to be good. Well Cervenka isn't going to be good if he's not playing or on the 4th line and if he isn't getting experience now it's hard to imagine him helping down the stretch if a playoff spot may be on the line.

Joey is playing well and backstops us to a solid 3-1 win. It gets dicey in the 2nd but the Flames hang tough.

March 7, 2004, the Flames thump Colorado 7-1 in Denver. That game was the defining moment in a season that eventually saw the Flames reach the Stanley Cup Finals.

I think its time for a little repeat of history.

Am I the only one who thought prior to getting benched Cervenka actually looked really good?!

He was getting points while co-piloting the 2nd line with Hudler very effectively.

This is of course, despite all the factors playing into it (conditioning, adjusting to NA hockey)

I have no problems with the guy, and actually am tempering my expectations, just looking to see an improvement in his toughness on the puck and overall play between now and the end of the season. You honestly cannot jump on this guy after playing on this continent for literally a month. Goodness people..

There's certainly been bright spots. I thought he outshone Jagr in Dallas' first game in Calgary, for example.

I don't know where this 'bust' talk is coming from.

Cervenka hasn't been great but he hasn't been noticeabley bad either, he has just been unnoticable all together.

The unfortunate thing is that the Flames have players in the top 9 that are playing much more productive hockey then Cervenka but he isn't suited for a 4th line role so he becomes the odd man out even if he is better than our 4th line players.

That's a pretty incredible leap of logic. I also don't think the Flames "sold us" on Cervenka being a centerman as though he was being brought in to be the #1 center we haven't had for 20 years. That was fan hype. If somebody else had signed this guy, we'd all be blaming management for not doing enough to build a winning team. So which is it? Would you rather we don't take small risks on guys like this? The more I read this paragraph the more ridiculous it becomes.

According to Hartley, a lot of Cervenka's problems are off-ice (that is, not necessarily conditioning). You can't exactly scout that. He has undeniable skill, which you can.

Only issue I have is that he is apparently a winger, if not in name, then in substance. It would be interesting to know what happened here. Does he take draws and play in the middle in the KHL but the roles are that different between the leagues?

Meh, wake me when this one is over. Hartley will ride Iginla, Tanguay, Cammalleri and Glencross, while guys like Baertschi and Cervenka basically ride the pine. Team loses, rinse, repeat. The definition of insanity is to.... be a Calgary Flames fan.

I hate that this is how I feel these days about this team.

I like Hartley's enthusiasm and all, but his line combinations are completely frustrating... Comeau really? Putting Cervenka on the 4th line and give him no minutes at all.. You can't judge him negatively because he's had no ice time! And what ice time he has had he's done fairly well I thought, especially with Hudler... not sure why Hartley decided that was no longer a good idea... Same goes for Sven, put him on the PP... I thought Brent Sutter was frustrating...

Flames you better come out and dominate. Feaster just took a huge risk and now we need wins or the flames are just giving the Av's a top 5 pick.

I will throw my tv out the window if you dont show up for this game!!!!!!
