Default Pepsi to remove Aspartame from it's diet products

http://www.cnbc.com/id/102618133

Quote:
Bowing to consumer demand to ditch aspartame, PepsiCo will debut Diet Pepsi free of the sweetener in the U.S. later this year, the company confirmed Friday.

"Diet cola drinkers in the U.S. told us they wanted aspartame-free Diet Pepsi and we're delivering," said Seth Kaufman, senior vice president of Pepsi and Flavors Portfolio, PepsiCo North America Beverages, in a release. "We recognize that consumer demand is evolving and we're confident that cola-lovers will enjoy the crisp, refreshing taste of this new product."

Instead of aspartame, Diet Pepsi, Caffeine Free Diet Pepsi and Wild Cherry Diet Pepsi will be sweetened with a blend of artificial sweeteners sucralose and acesulfame potassium in the U.S. The new drinks will hit shelves in August.

So remove a sweetner that's been around for decades and has gone through the most tests without any proven health concerns and replace with one that isn't as well known and hasn't been tested as thoroughly. Smart

Weak, I actually like the flavor of aspartame with caffeine.

Sucralose: Discovered in 1976.
Acesulfame potassium: Discovered in 1967.
Aspartame: Discovered in 1965.

Source: wikipedia

Doesn't look there's any substantial difference between the timeline for all three of these.

Cheaper most likely. Perhaps Aspartame got to big and was asking too much so Pepsi switched and made it look like like public opinion wins just to sell their diet product?

Server: What would you like to drink?
Me: Diet Coke please.
Server: Is Diet Pepsi okay?
Me: I'll have water.

/Pepsi sucks

It's about time. There was only so long that PepsiCo could bury aspartame's link to Greyscale.

On a more serious note, the change won't happen in Canada:

Quote:
PepsiCo says reformulated Diet Pepsi will start hitting shelves in August. The change only applies to the U.S. market and will affect all varieties of Diet Pepsi, such as Caffeine Free Diet Pepsi and Wild Cherry Diet Pepsi. It will not apply to other PepsiCo drinks, such as Diet Mountain Dew.

Coke Zero uses acesulfame potassium and aspartame. Maybe this switch will make Diet Pepsi taste better.

Not going to happen. They learned their lesson back in the 80's when they tried to change the Coke formula.

/Aspartame is gross,

Can't stand the flavour, probably wont drink the diet pop either way, so I'm indifferent.

Ever since changing my diet and trying to live a healthier lifestyle, I can't drink regular coke anymore. It's far too sweet and even drinking one will make me feel like crap for the next few hours. Zero though hits the "sweet" spot, perfect way for me to get my carbonation fix and not have to worry about adding any calories

Huh? This has never happened. Good try.

I actually don't like aspartame in general either. Only in Diet Coke do I like it. Can't stand all other diet pop.

I can't stand the taste of aspartame or any diet pop, but the fear mongering around aspartame is insane.
