No he should be suspended and put into the substance abuse program. Once he's completed it if he can't get over the border then the kings should have grounds to terminate him.

If oxy addiction is the grounds for termination this is a ######bag move by la to avoid his cap hit. I'm going through this with a friend right now, he hurt his neck in a car accident and can't kick it. It's like trying to quit smoking on steroids, seriously how many addictions can literally kill you by quiting cold turkey.
LA had the chance to do a compliance buyout and chose not too, and I am guessing Richards drug history was a big reason why.

I am sure they wrote into his contract langauge which would void his contract on there situations.

Lombardi gave him the final chance and he does this..... I get it, we want LA to be screwed, but it sure sounds like they did everything in their power to give Richards every chance to succeed

His current contract began in the 2008-2009 season. Were there known reasons (drug issues) back then to have put this into his contract? If not, Lombardi wouldn't have been able to modify Richards' contract to include any new language.

Which would be considered a material breach of contract, no? I mean, how is it not if he can't play because of this?

Well when this all cleared up and suppose he can't go play in the States, he could sign in Edmonton and probably get 50 or so games in during a season.

An addiction to painkillers would go a long way to explaining Richards' drastic decline in the past couple of seasons. That addiction the Kings and Flyers should also be responsible for in some way instead of completely cutting him loose.

The closest thing I can think of is Ryan Malone getting busted for Cocaine and DUI.

He entered rehab and the Lightning used a compliance buyout on him once he finished rehab.

So do you terminate a contract on "if"

If he did something as serious as smuggling wouldn't charges have been laid?

I believe.

Everyone is saying that if he is convicted, then he wouldn't be admissible to the USA, but it is my understanding that just the USA having knowledge of a Border Incident is enough for them to say they don't want him entering the country. Contrary to popular belief, its up to the foreign country to decide whether they want to let you in. You don't have a right to enter their country. A conviction is not needed for that decision.

I am sure they have clauses in their contracts with wording that implies they must be able to freely move across International Borders.

If he is refusing treatment ala Fleury, that would constitute a material breach.

An anecdotal story but a guy I new was caught with pot at the boarder wasn't charged but was banned from the US for a year.

This is going to sound mean, but how dumb is it to try and bring pot across the border?

Because this decision/move by LA is being fought by the player/NHLPA.

Only a small percentage of people get searched so I'm sure there are plenty of people who take the risk. Could be something as simple as just forgetting you had it in a pocket as well. I've known people in both situations and neither were caught.
