Bob McKenzie @TSNBobMcKenzie
On LA terminating Mike Richards' contract for "material breach," there are myriad reasons why details can't be made public at this time.

Bob McKenzie @TSNBobMcKenzie
Suffice to say it's extremely complicated and many lawyers are going to be very busy sorting this one out.

Wonder if this is a hail mary attempt?

Oh man, what did he do?

It could be as simple as being out of shape or failing to report.

Or it could be considerably more serious, but if they cant void Voynov's or Stoll's contracts I dont know what circumstances allow this.

Terminating a contract. When was the last time that happened?

You just knew the Kings were going to avoid the buyout penalty somehow.

This sounds like the Kings really trying to go around the outside to get out of this contract scott free....

I think they'll want to tread carefully here. Granted the PA don't seem to care which franchises treat their players poorly...there will always be a surplus of players wanting to go to LA.

No way the NHL lets this happen without length investigation, or else this will be the new compliance buyout.

Does this mean they won't have to pay Richards or he just won't count againt their cap?

Will be interesting to see what happens here.

Don't think you can terminate an NHL contract for something like a failed drug test can you?

Bob McKenzie @TSNBobMcKenzie
It is a given the Kings believe this move frees them of their contractual obligation to Richards and his $5.75M cap hit.

Bob McKenzie @TSNBobMcKenzie
I'm going to suspect Richards and his representatives may not see it the same way. Stay tuned on that.

They are claiming they have grounds to terminate his contract. That means no cap hit and no $ going to Richards.

the nhlpa is also going to be heavily involved in this, besides richards himself they are the ones with the most to lose.

LA must feel they have a water tight case. I would think the PA would fight this to the death as it opens the door for an NFL contract system I am sure no player wants. Also, despite being LA do players avoid LA because they would fear this happening to them if not the most obvious case? I mean they could sign in Anaheim or San Jose if it is the climate and location they want.

Should be fun to watch this play out.

This sucks. I hope it isn't allowed and they're forced to keep him for another year and have to buy him out next year.
