Icon37 Sens acquire Brandon Gormley from the Devils for future considerations

Yes a trade after the deadline can happen!

Gormley isn't eligible for the playoffs

Ottawa Senators @Senators
Trade: The #Sens have acquired defenceman Brandon Gormley from the New Jersey Devils for future considerations.

Remember when Sutter traded Gormley's pick for Olli Jokinen and everyone was calling him an idiot?

Wow, we sure got the better of that deal.

Was there a sure sign that Gormley would've been Sutter's choice though? Jaden Schwartz is more of a Sutter player...

Well, he wasn't going to take Tarasenko.

Jokinen was a seriously underrated Flame, I'm really happy with how that trade worked out.

Tough to judge. Gormley was just the guy the fans wanted. They very well might have had Kuznetsov or Tarasenko ranked there. Who really knows.

Darryl was the GM, he was always going to go CHL

Haven't followed Gormley, does anyone know off hand if he fulfill any expansion draft requirements?

So there's still hope we can trade Wideman?

Since we are past the trade deadline, despite the all the hate, he has more value to us right now as an insurance policy than a bag of pucks or steak dinner. In a playoff grind I would rather be able to turn to Wideman in the event Dmen start dropping like flies like they did in 04.

Backlund? (Allsvenskan)
Erixon? (SEL)
Chucko? (BCHL)

This stuff is right there with "Wiesbrod stepped over Tod Button on the Jankowski draft" as narrative nonsense. Sure, they had a philosophy earlier on of taking more "ready" players in the first round but by the Backlund draft it was clearly all about skill, upside, and hockey sense and they've stated multiple times that was mandated by Sutter.

^ Sorry, I could've sworn Backlund was picked from the Rockets

Chucko was still a Canadian
Erixon was the BPA

Or Sweden. Darryl didn't have particularily broad horizans in terms of where he drafted from but he did like his Swedes.

Edit: And yes, when the pick was made most everybody figured that Gormley was probably who Sutter would (although perhaps not should) have taken.

Drafted out of Sweden but later came to Canada to play for the Rockets.

Also, I don't recall many people being upset the Flames traded a first rounder for Jokinen. I believe most fans thought it was a fair return for the top centre needed to put the Flames over the top.

It wasn't until the Flame missed the playoffs in 2010 and the draft pick became 13th overall that the trade was viewed negatively in hindsight.

Sutter also drafted a Russian, so there goes that theory.

Did a quick search. The term "Gormley disaster" has only ever been used once before on CP, by... you.

I can't take credit for that. I'm paraphrasing one of our former Oiler trolls there. Maybe he didn't use Gormley disaster, but it was something like that.
