Default Final Fantasy & Journey LIVE Video Game Concerts in Calgary 2017

Not sure if people were aware but Distant Worlds (Final Fantasy) is coming to Calgary on May 21. Journey LIVE is coming May 5 lead by composer (and friend) Austin Wintory.

I'm going to both and hope that others might be interested.

You know, if you're not too juvenile for adult things like music, video games, the Jubilee, concerts, or the Calgary Philharmonic Orchestra & Chorus.

Joking aside, I'm really looking forward to these two evenings.

I was in the pre sale for Distant Worlds, very much looking forward to it. My wife is due with our second in July so I'll only be getting one concert that month, but I'm sure Journey would be great too.

Awesome! I'm always watching the concerts on youtube from other venues they've done.

This is my favourite one they've done:

Interview on CBC!

http://www.cbc.ca/news/canada/calgar...live-1.4100542

Imagine watching someone play a video game with all sorts of variables, and scoring a soundtrack for it, responding to the game play, on the fly.

That's exactly what members of the Chicago-based Fifth House Ensemble are tasked with Friday evening when gamers play the 2012 indie hit Journey at a Calgary concert hall.

"We have four to six game players that actually join us on stage," Eric Snoza told The Homestretch.

I guess it's just my wife and I. Kinda stressed to be anywhere near the stage lol!

That's awesome! You gonna go for the white outfit or do they ask you to play "normally"?

Normally. And kinda balance getting everything while still keeping things going. So we're probably going to miss stuff on purpose as we can't go out of our way to gather each and every piece!

Simply put, Journey Live was an incredible, once in a lifetime performance. Chemgear and his girlfriend/wife did a great job playing the game, and the ensemble did a fantastic job keeping up with the gameplay as they went along. Hearing the music live was so different from hearing it in the game. I'm so glad I got to see the game this way.

Honestly, I don't see how Distant Worlds will be able to match up to this. They're so different in their presentation and there's no time to really dig your teeth into a piece or get invested in what you see/hear compared to this.

There was a group of older people behind us who had never heard of Journey or play games at all, and they were enraptured by the whole thing. They were caught up in all the highs and lows during the entire performance. It's certainly proof of the concept, and Journey is the perfect game to show to people who just appreciate artistic works.

It was great to meet you last night, Chemgear! My apologies for not being more talkative, but I've had a really stressful week and was exhausted by the end of the night. I wasn't being myself! Thankfully my wife picked up the slack for me. :-)

Glad that you guys had a great time. While we had the easiest job, it was still a little stressful - definitely did not want to screw up on stage! No worries, it was good to meet and your wife in real life.

Thanks for the information about the changes at Video Game Trader. I'll have to go visit their store again sometime.

We are pretty exhausted today. We hosted Austin and his wife and ALL of the Fifth House Ensemble after the show; most of them had never tried VR and it was pretty neat to run them all through the various headsets.

Darn, how did I miss seeing this thread until now?

I've always wanted to go to a Final Fantasy concert. Looks like still tickets available. My only problem is, I don't know anyone else in my circle of friends who are Final Fantasy fans.

Would it be weird going to a concert by myself? I actually think I wouldn't mind it. Guess I'm gonna check with my co-worker tomorrow if he wants to go. If not, I'm gonna hit this up by myself ha ha.

Enjoy the things you like. Life is too short to worry about it.

Go for it!

Question: What's the expected attire for something like this? Normally for an orchestra I'd dress a little more formal (ie. office work attire). Is this the same? Or can I show up in normal weekend casual wear (ie. shorts and t-shirt)?

I don't think it's very formal at all. But I guess it's at the Jubilee - I'm not sure I'd do shorts.

That said, I'm going pretty casual with a T shirt.

PROGRAM HIGHLIGHTS:

FINAL FANTASY VII: Cosmo Canyon
FINAL FANTASY VIII: Don’t Be Afraid
FINAL FANTASY IX: Roses of May
FINAL FANTASY X: Zanarkand
FINAL FANTASY XV: Apocalypsis Noctis
Doesn't seem like a very long concert, unless more songs are planned but not shown in the list?

Yeah, that cannot be complete. Rose of May is like a minute and a half long.

The version on the Distant Worlds album is 4 minutes long.

I figure they're just teasing a few, but there's going to be some more things that they play at every show regardless. I would guess the medleys on their albums (Battle Medley, FF I-III medley, Chocobo Medley, Character Medley from FFVI) and some of the really popular tracks will probably be done (One Winged Angel, Liberi Fatali, maybe Zanarkand or Aerith's Theme).

I bought all three albums instead of buying tickets to the show. They're really good! After hearing them, I would be very sad not to hear stuff like Memoro de la Stono (FFXI), Balance is Restored (FFVI) or Answers (FFXIV) live. They're really great interpretations on their respective original compositions.
