Default Gee Gee Gee Gee Baby Baby Baby (Korean Entertainment Thread)

With the success of Gangnam Style, K-Pop is suddenly becoming a thing. It's very big and bright and loud and catchy, and it might actually catch on in Canada. Is Gangnam Style just a fad or will K-Pop become mainstream?

Here's some background.

Some of my favourite videos:

Movies/TV Dramas

I think the best drama of 2012 was Ghost:

Trailer:

It's a big cyber-crime case (20 episodes)

Episode 1 (entire series english subtitled):
http://www.viki.com/channels/8112-ghost/videos/70777

Another one I'm watching right now is King of Dramas.
It's a funny look of how a drama is made.. a drama poking fun at the drama making industry so it's really interesting. The first episode is about how to get a box of orange juice into a death scene as product placement!

Trailer:

Episode 1 (out of 6 so far) (english subtitled) (it airs Monday and Tuesday nights in Korea)

What's your Korean drama experience? Favourite singers? Bands? Actors? Actresses? Post them all here. I'll keep you up to date on what's new and what I'm watching

Something new coming out in February 2013 is IRIS II! Has anyone watched IRIS I? I don't want to spoil it!

My favourite horror/thriller movies are Korean. Basically anything by directors Chan-wook Park or Jee-woon Kim.

Chan-wook Park:
Sympathy for Mr. Vengeance
Oldboy

Sympathy for Lady Vengeance
Thirst

Jee-woon Kim:
A Bittersweet Life
I Saw the Devil

Others:
The Chaser
The Man from Nowhere

If you're at all interested in thrillers you owe it to yourself to check these out.

Man this movie has been on Movie Central for the past couple of months. Definitely not for the faint of heart.

I think she's pretty natural, we've seen her in dramas since she was in her teens and she hasn't changed that much.

Those pictures are more airbrushed than anything.

Heh, I wonder how many other people actually could hum the thread title.

I don't know if it can take off in NA, but it'll probably have more of a presence given the success of Psy.

Cool link at the bottom of one of those articles though about a guy doing remixes of Studio Ghibli soundtracks, they're pretty awesome.

Is there such a thing as overdosing on cute?

this style of music is also huge in Thailand, and i couldn't stand it. having to listen to it non-stop on a 6 hour bus ride through the country is almost enough to make one wish for the sweet embrace of death

Yeah it's like candy.. a little here and there is great, getting the Costco sized bag of M&Ms may SEEM like a good idea, but it's not.

There's only one good thing about K-Pop, and it's Korean women.

They actually have women in K-pop? They all look like girls to me. What's the max age for females in K-pop before they punt them out the door?

hmm I think Girl's Generation are all 22-23ish. They're starting to branch off into acting roles so maybe less singing and performing.

I just discovered a lot of free Korean dramas on www.viki.com which is actually an app built into my Samsung TV. It's kind of crazy how much Korean entertainment is built into it.

I marathon-ed City Hunter a few months ago on Netflix US. It's a great series and probably the one I'd recommend to someone who hasn't watched Korean dramas before (because most of the rest are way more soap-operaish) but I was disappointed that it had nothing to do with the Japanese anime/manga of the same name that I grew up with.

Can't find any other Korean dramas that can keep my interest though. Strange that in a culture that supposedly has so many young plastic surgery starlets, it seems like the trend in dramas is plain/older looking women surrounded by pretty boys with coiffy hair. Bleeecch. Don't want to watch that.

I like viki too. I like City Hunter as well but I'm not a Lee Minho fan (I might be the only girl not a fan of him)

Try Ghost that I mentioned above, I think you'll like it.

I'm 3 episodes into King of Dramas. It's bit zany but so far I like the characters
