A crescent Moon, Venus and Jupiter were lined-up in the south west at dusk.

I haven't been lucky enough to see them since I moved to Calgary eight years ago. I keep hoping, though.

Saw one of the more brilliant displays just in Lake Louise a couple of years back. Just helps to be away from the light pollution of Calgary.

Was that in 2010? Like in January? I was there if that's when you are talking about.

Nope, a few more years back. It was sometime in March of 2008. Seems like a good place to view them from then.

By the way, anybody have pretty crappy cell phone service last night? I was seeing in the -100 dbm range, when normally I get about -75 to -85.

I am very far from a professional photographer, and didn't even know if these would turn out, but took this in Bearspaw just 10 minutes ago...

Probably drove right past you in Bearspaw, I took some shots out that way around that same time. Looks like it's quieting down now though. Might post some photos in the morning.

The largest solar storm in five years is racing toward Earth, threatening to unleash a torrent of charged particles that could disrupt power grids, GPS and airplane flights.

The sun erupted Tuesday evening, and the effects should start smacking Earth between 1 a.m. and 5 a.m. EST Thursday, according to forecasters at the federal government’s Space Weather Prediction Center. They say the storm, which started with a massive solar flare, is growing as it speeds outward from the sun.

[...]

That means for North America the “good” part of a solar storm — the one that creates more noticeable auroras or Northern Lights — will peak Thursday evening. Auroras could dip as far south as the Great Lakes states or lower, Kunches said, but a full moon will make them harder to see.

Here's a pic of the solar flare, sort of a large image.

Spoiler!

Off topic to northern lights but the combination of Mars, Venus, and Jupiter outside tonight is quite cool. Also Jupiter and Venus are close to aligning along the orbital plane of our solar system, soon they should appear like a single bright spot in the sky.

They're fading in and out. Can see them from the inner city at the moment.
