Caps fire McPhee and Oates
David Pagnotta @TheFourthPeriod
Whispers getting louder in DC. Not confirmed yet, but barring last min change, sounds like Caps GM George McPhee & coach Adam Oates are out.
update:
Mike Vogel @VogsCaps
#Caps announce that they will not renew the contract of GM George McPhee and that head coach Adam Oates will be relieved of his duties.

I am filled with a sudden terror.
Please don't bring in a GM that tried to build around a winger after we just went through 10 plus years of this futility

There has to be a non-retread out there that Burke is targeting. McPhee would be a massive disappointment.

Yeah, a fresh voice with Burke weighing in on trades is the best case scenario for us.

The Caps were really only a good team when they had a good coach and now he's leading the Ducks to the playoffs. Wouldn't be surprised to see Trotz getting interviewed as soon as the GM is hired.

For my money, George McPhee is the worst GM in the league.

Been watching the Caps all season, Oates is literally so stupid, I am amazed he coached this year. The matches he kept switching around in the line up were just amazing to see how a coach supposedly of his calibur can screw up. More than once was he even quoted that players had to earn they're strips by sitting on the 4th line for example kuznetsov, instead of potentially putting kuz - backs - ovi to propel them into the playoffs. What he did was drop backs to the second line play that scrub beagle centering ovi and that's when it all fell apart

And kept playing Halak even though Halak kept costing them game after game with letting in crap goals.

They're out of touch
They're out of time (time)
And they're out of their heads
When the caps hit the ground
They're're out of touch
They're out of time (time)
And they're out of their heads
When the caps hit the ground
Oh, oh-oh, oh
Oh, oh-oh, oh

If I was Boudreau, I would find this pretty humorous.

That would be pretty harsh considering they have consistently been a playoff team up until this season.
Look back at his last 10 years of drafting as Caps GM.
100+ Games: Ovechkin, Schultz, Green, Lepisto, Kennedy, Backstrom, Varlamov, Neuvirth, Perreault, Alzner, Carlson, Holtby, Eakin, Orlov, Johannsson
Not a bad group of picks. Plus other picks like Forsberg, Wilson, Kuznetsov, Burakovsky, Bowey, and Carrick that haven't been that bad.
His mistakes have been making in trades in an attempt to help the Capitals win now (Erat for Forsberg, Eakin for Riberio) but GMs tend to make those moves when they know they need to win.
I hope the Flames don't make him G.M. as I would like some fresh blood in that role but there have been much worse GMs in the NHL over that time.

Not really interested in a GM that just builds a playoff team though. I want a GM who won't sit on his hands when it's evident the makeup of his team isn't a legit contender.

What do you do in Washington though?
Could you have seriously traded Ovechkin when the owner loves him and his marketability.
