One correction to your article.
Quote:
The 2014 Abbotsford Heat dressed 43 different players, and have an average age of 25.4. Their top ten scorers average 24.3 years of age, and their goaltender will be Joni Ortio aged 23.
|
We dressed 56 different players this year. 49 of those forward/defence, 7 of them goaltenders.

My number seemed low to be honest, so that makes sense. Took the total team stats off of hockeydb.com and that's what they had.
Odd they'd be so wrong.
Thanks

I watched some of overtime online last night.
There was nobody there watching. I maybe saw 10 people.
I wonder what the attendance was.

Tepid optimism is the adjectives I'd use to describe the article and I think it's bang on. Exactly how I feel. Can't forget the lessons of the past, but this does look and feel different too.

Announced attendance was 2,420. The arena holds about 7,000.

It would be interesting to take the two groups of players and rank them as they were viewed in their respective times, minus the obvious crystal ball you'd have with the 2001 Saint John guys.
Where would Tkaczuk and Fata rank among the guys you mentioned in Abbotsford now?
You certainly did a great job of pointing out how much deeper the prospect pool is now, though.

Good article.
I think the final sentence is a bit over-optimistic. We may be bursting at the seems with potential NHL'ers, which is a HUGE step forward for our beloved organization - but we're not busting at the seems with NHL impact players.
With a top 5 pick this year, and what I predict will be another high pick next year alongside hopefully at least an additional 2nd round pick in '15 as well - I think the Summer of 2015 is when management should then start REALLY building outside of the draft and "going for it".
2015 boasts a potentially fruitful free agency crop, and a lot of our prospects will be right "there" as far as being established pros and ready to make the hop forward.
I really do hope Connie's sentiments on the Fan the other day ring true - and that there will be the appropriate amount of patience shown. This summer is not the year to rush things, it's another summer to help prepare for another strong year of continued development of that team identity we all fell in love with this past season. We need another year like this one where we absolutely establish ourselves and one of the, if not THE hardest working team in the league.
It was cool to watch the young guys last night (I paid the 10 bucks for the AHL Live game), unfortunate finish - but very exciting. I'll definitely be watching as the Heat continue down their playoff road.

I like the single CP puck logo better than the one with the stuff around it but its certainly better than the crap I used to create!
That being said I love change ... maybe we should entertain a new logo

Fun article. Loved it.
Minor editing nit-picking "Robyn, Regehr" makes him look like two people and "when" on to win a Stanley cup.

Last I saw the CP twitter it was that logo on the top left of the site, it stood out as really ugly on twitter. Just the round puck is better but I'd say it's way past time for a new logo contest.

I somehow have a ball cap with the one with the stick - can't recall how I got my hands on that.

One thing that makes our AHL team more indicative of the Flames future is that the AHL has changed. It is now more a prospect league than it was. They now have rules on how many vets can dress, so the young players get a chance. I'm not sure of the year it changed but 2001 could be the reasonable date as that was the year the IHL folded. Now a lot of the vets go overseas or down to the ECHL. It's maybe lowered the competitive level of the league, but the results for the NHL are better.

It's terrifying to equate any of these current prospects to the 2000/2001 batch (traumatic let-downs, all of them!)
I get a different feeling about these players. There's not nearly as much riding on the young guys developing in the minors as there was back then. Tkaczuk, Fata & Saprykin were our only hope to compete, or so it felt in that dark, pre-salary cap era. Nowadays I think we can all acknowledge that it's only a matter of time (and savvy management) before things turn around.
