Default Electric car drives 500 miles after a min charge

http://edition.cnn.com/2007/TECH/09/....ap/index.html

Quote:
An Austin-based startup called EEStor promised "technologies for replacement of electrochemical batteries," meaning a motorist could plug in a car for five minutes and drive 500 miles roundtrip between Dallas and Houston without gasoline.
Interesting if it is actually true. But it seems a little bit far fetched. I am not a mechanical nor electrical engineer, so I am not sure exactly how this would work.

But it seems a little "To Good to be True". Kind of like Bre-X in th 90's.

Hmmm, the math doesn't seem to add up.

Let's say you have a 220v connection in your home (same as a dryer) and what can you run through those? 15-20 amps?

So the total ammount of power you could run through that would be
220v * 20 amps = 4400 watts of power or about 5.8 Hp
So you'd only be able to get about 5.8 HP out of your car for a total of 5 minutes (assuming 100% efficiency), wich seems unlikely to get you anywhere near 500 miles from your house.

I don't think I've made any wild assumptions, and it doesn't look promising, but maybe I'm missing something, like they're talking about using a super efficient ultra light, really slow car like the ones that win the ultra milage competitions held by universites, but if that's the case, the how practical is that? Not very.

This is basically an ultra-capacitor.. and in theory this would work if you could create a cap that could hold enough charge and be safe.

The charge times are probably based on the max charge the cap could accept, not normal house wiring.

They neglect to mention that the "motorist" will be your cat. Further, he will need to accelerate the vehicle Fred-Flintstone style before the electric motor can overcome the friction of the drive-train sufficiently to maintain speed.
