MacBook Pro HDMI
I have not used my MacBook on my tv yet, I was wondering since there is no HDMI what do I use to plug and watch with both audio/video, since the DVi to HDMI one does video.
I searched google and this is what I got.
http://support.apple.com/kb/HT4241
My model is from 2009.
Thanks

If you don't want to buy an expensive mini displayport cable and hdmi adapter, you could just do video through DVI and hook up your sound to the stereo headphone jack.

The headphone jack is a combined analog and digital audio out. For something simple (going to a TV or some small powered speakers) you can just use a standard 3.5mm headphone connection and maybe a 3.5mm to RCA adapter depending on what you're connecting to.
For digital out or surround sound there's also an optical audio out and you'll need a Toslink cable that has a regular 5mm connection on one end (for your audio equipment) and mini Toslink connection on the other end (for your Macbook). You can either get a cable like that or just get a regular Toslink cable with a 5mm to mini adapter to connect to your computer. Here's a cable from Monoprice:

Obviously you'd also need something that can handle an optical audio in for the 2nd option to work.

saw one of those mini toslink connections at memory express too, the trick is then getting the appropriate codecs etc to output proper surround.

You're only flaming yourself. DisplayPort and Apple's Mini DisplayPort and Thunderbolt are the royalty free, open replacements for DVI and compliments and exceeds HDMI. It is the future of audio visual interconnects for high resolution displays and computers.

It may have gained ground in LCD monitors, but I don't think we'll be seeing HDMI die any time soon. But feel free to think that you'll be plugging this in to any of the 2011 or likely 2012 TVs. I think I'll stick to the defacto universal standard instead of whatever Apple has cooked up to sell dongles this week.

Mini Displayport is a pretty big standard. HP, Dell both use it who are big manufacturers ^_^

So, in honesty, you are all telling me that you wouldn't want Apple to include an HDMI port on their devices, that you would rather use an adapter?
Wow.

I have no problem using an adapter. The Mini Displayport covers a wide variety of outputs (VGA, DVI, HDMI, MDP)- now including Thunderbolt. All under 1 miniscule plugin.

I'll give you Thunderbolt, as that is a nice tech.

No, I'm just saying this is terrible flame bait because not many MBP owners care about this. I use my MBP mostly for work, and I don't buy cheap monitors. They support DisplayPort so I don't need an adapter.
I'd take another USB port before I'd take an HDMI port.

Along those lines... I'd even settle for more space in between the USB ports that are already there (also long before I'd ever care about an HDMI port on a laptop).
