Default Gulutzan's goal challenge record

Had to bring this one up because I couldn't believe he challenged last nights goal and even though the timeout we lost didn't matter I've seen GG challenge too many iffy calls early in a game and it burned us when we lost to the Blackhawks and the Hossa goal and its seemingly burned us a few other times this year just can't remember specifically which games. I can't remember a challenge that he has won to be honest -- was looking for the stats but couldn't find anything -- does anyone have a breakdown??

I'm OK with the challenge last night only for the reason that Elliot was going crazy about it and it gives the goalie the confidence that coach is on his side. Call it a mental boost for the goalie. The game was already long over so burning the timeout didn't matter. But yes, the call wasn't even close to being overturned.

Agreed.

His track record isn't great, for sure, but last night was not a bad decision.

Isn't it the video coach Jamie Pringle who makes the call from upstairs?

Yea this seems like a really odd complaint to be making since it's clearly a team of people upstairs reviewing footage and relaying to the bench what calls are worth challenging etc.

I agree, it seems he doesn't challenge the right calls and it did burn us earlier in the year when he challenged a early goal that had no chance of being over turned and then later in the game I forget what team it was (Chicago?) scored the game winning goal late in the game and it was clear goalie interference and we couldn't challenge it.

He's had some iffy challenges but don't the Flames have guys upstairs making those calls?

The coach's challenge is kind of a no win anyways. Any time a goal is remotely questionable you should roll the dice. One goal games absolutely make or break 1-2 points in the season.

I bet the video team has a library of reviews that they go over. If there is anything that is close to a similar situation they problem roll the dice. Part of the problem is that standard can be hit or miss depending on the ref that night.

I think these posts all nailed it. The head coach gets the final say on what to challenge, but without good support upstairs, he is relying on the Jumbotron, while he is supposed to also being manning all the other little responsibilities of the bench.

The coach should be told something like "Hey it is a category A/B/C/D call". The coach knows the time out situation vs what is needed in the game at that moment and makes the call.

This makes it very hard for an outsider to see where the ball is being dropped.

And it would require analyzing the "record" of all other coaches, at the very least, for the stat to be meaningful.

The league put monitors in the benches themselves so Gulutzan had seen a replay himself before making that call. Though he certainly would have had input from others as well.

It was a bad challenge. There was no way it would have been overturned. It was not, however, Gulutzan's worst challenge. He's had a few, but the one in Vancouver where he burned the time-out in the first period on a hail mary after the referees rightly called back a goal when Tkachuk went into Miller unmolested was ridiculous.

before these rules coaches would often call a timeout after a goal just to settle down his team...if you are gonna call one anyway you might as well challenge the goal

never know

Some of you aren't really considering the challenge also gives the team a "timeout" usually a longer one

Actually, Dino, that consideration is entirely why Gulutzan has me hoping they start handing delay of game penalties out on failed challenges. He's not exactly tactical on when he chooses to go that route.

Burning the time out for no reason in the first or second period, as he does, simply wastes the time out and wastes everyone's time.
