Default A pint is 20 ounces

And now you can be fined for serving otherwise without notifying the customer!

Rally to me!!! Rally to me!!!

Quote:
Measurement Canada’s Fairness at the Pumps act, introduced last month, says businesses serving a pint that contains less than 19.5 ounces of liquid (head doesn’t count) can face fines ranging from $250 to $2,000.

thats not news, its been like that for as long as ive known.....they can serve a lesser "pint" if they specify the quantity, which is why you see alot of beer halls selling 16oz pints here, it says so on the menu so its ok. The problem lies when they sell a pint with no additional description, then its 20oz by law

You have always been able to report places in Alberta advertising "Pints" without their actual volume if they were not 20 oz.

An Imperial fl.oz. is 28.4131mL and an Imperial pint is 20 Imperial fl.oz. (568.262mL).

A US fl.oz. is 29.5735mL and a US pint is 16 US fl.oz. (473.176mL).

It would only be 591mL if you were using a US fl.oz. to make an Imperial pint.

What a stupid system.

I had a memorable encounter with a waitress years ago when I was out for beer with my buddy and his dad, a bristling 60-something guy who grew up on the mean streets of Northern England.

Waitress puts down a 'pint' in front of my friend's dad.

"Miss, that is not a bloody pint!"

"Um, sorry, that's what we call a pint..."

"EXCUSE ME! What WE CALL a pint?! It's not a proper pint. A proper pint is 20 ounces. I don't care what you bloody well call a pint. That's not 20 ounces."

"Umm, sorry..."

"Take this back and bring me a proper pint, miss."

"I'm sorry, we don't have bigger glasses."

"You're a pub and you don't have proper pint glasses?"

Nervous laughter from waitress.

"Alright then, I'll pay you with WHAT I CALL dollars. They're 80 cents. So I'll pay you four dollars fifty for this pint you want five dollars seventy for."

And he was dead serious.

I think by law, all bars in Canada should have to serve beer in these glasses:

Yeah, it would make a lot of sense to just go with the 0.5L pint glasses the EU uses.

OK, so what pubs in Calgary have proper, 20 oz pints as the standard?

I can think of:

Ship & Anchor
Kensington Pub
Dog & Duck

Where else?

^^ Bear and Kilt. Palomino..

Man Hudson's pisses me off for that. Not only a thick glass bottom, but a bevel line you can see near the bottom. Once you get to the bevel, you might as well order another one because you have about 2 micro-sips left

This pint thing is a pet peeve of mine. More so when the waitress doesn't even understand the difference.

I think Calgary was the first place I noticed a pint that wasn't 20 ounces, might have been at Craft Beer Market. Paying more for a beer and getting less, I was not happy. It has power creeped its way into Saskatoon now as well though, only a few places that I've noticed stick to the 20 ounce selection.

I think that you always had to advertise it, but this was the first time I have seen that you can actually lobby a complaint against an establishment through a federal website. Now THAT is cool.

Vancouver saw the craze start. They also saw the problem of the 14oz pint. With a handful of chain restaurants and bars operating in both cities it was only a matter of time before it started creeping across.

Though they've gotten on top of the places in Vancouver recently, especially after this article came out a couple years ago.

http://news.nationalpost.com/news/ca...ns-probe-finds

Then there is the nefarious big bottom glass that plagued its way through the US (where a pint isn't a federally controlled standard).

I never pay attention to this stuff, I just order a pint and drink whatever they give me. Going for beers tonight for the game so I'll be looking for it.

Are you sure about Local 510? The Local on Stephen Avenue definitely doesn't have 20 oz pints (though I believe they indicate that on their menu).
