I doubt that has ever been entirely appropriate.

"The strap" was a vague threat that only kids talked about and nobody I knew ever saw it, let alone got hit with it. No teacher ever threw anything at a kid. We got called out for chewing gum and had to get rid of it but that was about it. There was no grabbing ears any of that.
I was no angel, and got hollered at and spent more than my share of time in the Principal's office or banished from class to sit like an idiot in the hallway, but damn, it sounds like you went to the same school Charles Dickens went to.

The harsher strap stuff, took place in a Catholic school in a small town run by the sisters when I had to go there when our house burnt down (I didn't do it), also the grabbing by the ears etc all sisters. Also I went to that school writing left handed and left trying to write right handed, because the devil resides in the left hand.
The chewing gum, the teacher with the hypersonic arm, the principal and the parent teacher conferences all took place in the Calgary public system

My defining memory of elementary school (primary in the UK) was when I was in second grade I think, watching a first grader sliding backwards sitting on his arse dragged by his hair down the corridor to the classroom by the older female teacher screaming his lungs out for his mummy, it was the first week of school and the first graders were all scared to death of leaving mum at the front door, once around the corner from the door away from the view of mum we learnt to stifle the sniffles and get our crap together fast or get smacked into line!

I saw Ricky Gervais this evening doing a warm up gig for his 'Humanity' tour. He mentioned the 'do not drink' warnings on bottles of bleach and referendums.
Reckoned the warnings should be removed for two years and then hold the referendum.

Oh okay.
To tell you the truth, that parent teacher thing sounds like the worst part of it. Makes me uncomfortable just thinking about it. I had to sit at home, dreading my mom's imminent return from a meeting with my teacher. But also trying to get in as much TV (or "screen time", as the kids say now) I could before she got home, because I knew that was going off the minute she got in the door.
Practically have the sweats right now thinking about it, to tell you the truth.

Personally I think that the teachers at some point had enough of my BS. I wasn't the best student out there. If I was a student nowdays they would have probably loaded me up with drugs and let me sit in the corner drooling.

It feels like you're insulting your mother, because I thought this was a home schooling joke all along.

I remember having to go to conferences with my parents. And in elementary school, you got caught with gum, you would be sticking it to your nose for the rest of class. It went 'ah mr puffnstuff, I see you have gum, lets have everyone see it shall we. Why dont you put it on your nose so everyone can see you have gum'

Hahaha, reminds me of the first term in school when my family moved to Ireland (grade 10).
It was our school's Sport's Day and it being Ireland meant it was raining heavily so we were all sent to our Form Classes.
One of my friends was chewing gum and was called out on it by Mr Powell who always was good for a laugh. He called my friend to the front of class and told him to empty his pockets. Gerry pulled the contents from one of the pockets and out came the pack of gum.
Mr. Powell didn't leave it there. "Hmmmm, ok now, other pocket".
And that's when the cigarettes and lighter came out.
We all just sat there in silence because Mr. Powell had the comic pause down to a tee.
He read the packaging on the gum...."Hubba Bubba. Big bubbles, no troubles."
Then he looked up at my buddy and deadpanned, "now it's no bubbles and big troubles."
The whole class was in stitches.

Sadly I had a French teacher in I think High School, she was cute and young and really nice, and I will admit that I had a crush on her. I would go out of my way to join the french club. (Yes for a while I was pretty fluent in two languages). I would show up early for class, all of that stuff. For a while hers was the only class where I got good grades. Because like I said I really struggled for a long time in school.
At the end of I think Grade 10, she decided to move back to Quebec. I remember talking to her and getting her to sign my yearbook. She actually left her phone number to where she was going in case I ever needed to talk, because again, I had some troubles and she was nice enough to care.
She never got home, she was side swiped off of the road in Manitoba on the way home and died, I found out through the school the next year when we had a special assembly. She was only about 25, and one of the nicest teacher I had ever had. Even though the teacher with the pitching arm was one of my favorites for some reason.

I got the strap a couple of times in elementary school - i remember the playground legend was to put a piece of hair on your palm so that the strap would open up a cut and you could sue the school. Can't think of anyone who successfully pulled that one off
