Or the back-facing seats in a chevy station wagon. Just let the kids play back there untethered.

It amazes me that some NHLers were skating around at full speed without helmets up until the 90s.

I hitched a ride once from Vancouver to Salmon Arm in the box of a pick-up truck. Guys even passed me back a beer. Felt like Jack Kerouac.

There was one game that I remember where he hit a couple of fans and for the next few shifts came out with a towel around his neck to throw to a fan in case he hit them.

No word of exaggeration to say LaVallee had the hardest shot of any hockey player ever, but also as accurate to say he didn't have a freakin clue where it was going at times.
I remember a couple old barns where there was no glass at all...instead there would be chain link fencing about 4 feet up from really short boards similar to this...
Also...playing with no helmets nevermind visors.

That reminds me of when I watch a cherished, childhood 80s movie: "Hmm, I don't recall this movie having 78 homophobic expressions in it before..."

Even more mind boggling was goaltenders not wearing any facial protection until the 60's.
My uncle took over 200 stitches to his face before finally molding one of the earliest styles of masks along with Jacques Plante.
I remember hearing a story how he faced a slapshot from some Soviet player (i think or a Swede maybe?) in the World Championships that had it hit him, likely would have killed him.
Edit....cant believe i found this online when he did put the mask on the first time....pure awesomeness for me. Will have to send it to my aunt.

Piling loads of kids into cars. When we went to away fields for soccer, we would fit the whole team in a station wagon and two cars. I remember my dad taking me and my friends to the bowling alley for my birthday when I was 9. He fit eight kids into our Datsun compact - two sitting up front, four sitting in back, and two kids on the floor in the back.

Each arena has the choice of using either white or black. Most arenas use black, but a few (New Jersey and Philadelphia to name two) use the white.
When looking at the ice, they both pretty much disappear, but the white is a lot more noticeable against the darker crowd.
New Jersey, white netting...
New York, black netting...

Oh yeah, the black is ten times better. Looking at those examples I'm surprised there's two teams in the league that would go with the more apparent white netting. I wonder what their reasoning would be?

I remember some people complaining about it. That it would obscure the view, lower the demand for those seats, and the usual redneck macho "#####" complaints of the weakening of society.
EDIT:

Same people probably complained about this too. How they were forcing "real men" to turn into pussies or the horror of them forcing their kids to wear a helmet.

That and staring out at the open road from the bunk in a truck-mounted camper. I've been to every province in Canada with that view! My parents would likely be thrown in jail for that now!

Lots of complaints at the time....but the vast vast majority of those were from players themselves. Kids though always had to wear them as far as i can remember.

Maybe they think that being able to see the ice is more important than netting potentially clashing with the crowd?
