Dan Blackburn.
He, along with Patrick Roy, were my idols growing up. I wanted to be Dan Blackburn. Stupid Fataing shoulder. It was pretty cool seeing him with two blockers though.

Was at the game last night. He was by far the most dangerous player on the ice. He's fast, intense, and seems really smart. Plus he's a right hand shot. Very impressed with his game.

I was also at the game last night and can confirm he was great. He makes a lot of nifty little plays look effortless and isn't afraid to go into the corners or to the front of the net against some big guys. He got some extra attention as well similar to the way Johnny does.
Exciting prospect

I wonder if he gets consideration for the WJC next year. He and Dube are both eligible.

I've always wondered what eliminates the risk to draft small skill guys early, and what pushes others down.
Marner - High
Keller - High
Phillips - Late
Gaudreau - Late
Sure there are other examples.

Well Marner and Keller are both a few inches or more taller than Phillips and Gaudreau.

Marner, although light, is 5'11. He's quite a bit taller than the other 3.
Keller had 1.61 points per game in the USHL
Gaudreau only 1.2 points per game at that same level. He's also smaller than Keller. Plus, Gaudreau's success set some precedence for Keller.
Philips is the smallest and had the lower point per game. Definitely a good value pick.
So Marner and Keller were both taller and more productive than Gaudreau and Phillips.
Personally, I think that if you're small, you're small. 5'6 isn't much worse than 5'8, since being very physical is basically a lost cause at that point.
Small players can have high potential as long as they're durable, IMO.

Marner and Keller were both producing historically dominant numbers in their draft year in situations with direct comparables (like Patrick Kane). Keller is also a dominant two-way player.
Gaudreau played in the USHL and Phillips was only a PPG in the WHL which while solid is also pedestrian.

Phillips was really good last year, but this year he has become a dominant CHL player. Royals don't have many other options besides Phillips so he's been getting the toughest D matchups possible every night.

Some of it has to do with opportunity. Both Marner and Keller were prominent members of national teams whereas Phillips may get a chance and Gaudreau was taken somewhat reluctantly.
