Default Lethbridge Flooding

Happy Canada Day!

We had a brutal storm come through, with what seemed like a 45 minute hard downpour and continuous rain after that for much of the afternoon. There is flooding everywhere and a state of emergency has been declared. Residents are not to use water unless necessary. Pretty crazy stuff considering this wasn't even forecast (still calling for 5-10mm rain), HA!

Here are some pics:

A field that has seen pooling water only twice in the last 16 years.

Park/Catch Basin

Main road to the westside backed up.

Under the bridge

On top of the bridge and the reason the road is backed up. Look at the height of the water on the jersey barriers to the right.

A brave soul. He only tried it after we egged him on.

At least he brought the kitchen sink with him.

At this point, I realized walking around in the sewage infested waters was not a good idea any longer.

So I wasn't supposed to do my laundry today.....whoops.

It's crazy. Pretty much every sewer I've passed today has been backed up. I wonder what the road by Henderson is like, there's usually some fairly large puddles with normal size rainstorms. I wouldn't be surprised if it is completely flooded.

That's Whoop-up Drive backed up like crazy, right? Not Crowsnest Tr.?

Not bad at all for a 45 minute storm. Wonder if that is the same system that apparently dumped a pile of snow in the mountains in Montana?

Yep, that's Whoop-Up drive. Just announced on the news that it is finally open again. 80mm of rain in 4 hours with 25mm of that in the 45min storm.

I've been complaining about the gas mileage on my 4x4, but I was smiling today as I plowed through the huge lakes with nary a problem, dodging the stalled cars and minivans.

Crazy amount of rain in a very short period of time. Reminded me of the flooding in Edmonton a few years back...

How does it compare to the flood in the mid 90's? Did they close any of the bridges?

The flood of 1995 and this flooding were two different beasts. In 1995 there was prolonged rainfall combined with melting snow in the mountains that raised the level of the rivers and streams.

The current one is an intense rainfall over a short period of time that saw the storm sewers backup. I'm not sure if they closed down the Whoop Up Drive bridge completely or narrowed it down to one lane. I was actually in Waterton for the day so I missed all the fun and games. We did pass through a couple of intersections that were flooded over on our way home, and that was at 6:00pm, some 4 hours after the rain.

Besides the horrors of a flood, Lethbridge looks so pretty in these pictures! The car with the kitchen sink was pretty amusing.

That was quite the storm. I knew it was going to be bad when my dish couldn't get a signal due to the extreme cloud cover. It actually felt like night time during the middle of the day.

Now it probably won't rain for a month and we will be back into the regular desert conditions.

I'll have to give my parents a call and see if their basement is all right. They live pretty close to the Safeway in the first picture and that area is prone to flooding at the best of times...

Haven't heard about too many problems on the west side... the south/north though, oh boy do they ever have water in the basements.

I just wish they didn't cancel the fireworks

That Safeway in the picture is on the west side? I thought that was the Safeway on Mayor Magrath Drive by my parents place. (which is prone to flooding...)
