Some final thoughts on the final
- Roger I think finally figured out that beating Rafa is not about skill or shot making, but fighting for everything, that whatever advantages Roger had from a technical standpoint were meaningless. It had some great moments, but this match was a dog fight more than an exhibition of brilliance. Roger played worse than any of the last three GS finals against Novak, but he was grittier.
- Perhaps getting behind in the fifth actually helped Roger. Allowed him to really take the nerves off and go for it. 23 winners and 9 errors in the final set, his most winners of any set.
- Rafa actually dropped in 85% of his first serves in the fifth, but still got broken twice from ahead, and allowed 11 break points total in four service games. Definitely surprising.
- Ivan Ljubicic deserves a lot of credit for his work on improving Federer's backhand. Best it's looked in years.
- I also think Federer owes Dimitrov a debt of thanks. Dimitrov showed him that using the backhand aggressively is the best way to counter the Nadal forehand.
- To me, Rafa stands too far back returning points. Helped Roger play faster points by not allowing Nadal to get back to the baseline.
- For Rafa, this is about the same as what Roger experienced when he lost in the 2014 Wimbledon final. He proved to himself he can still win majors. French will always be his best chance, though it's still going to be difficult, like it was for Roger, to win when you usually have to beat Andy and Novak both to win. Still I'd bet on him adding one more major in the next two years.
- But hopefully we get three more majors like this, wildly unpredictable. Seems like we've finally reached the point where Novak and Andy can be had by more people than just Roger or Stan. So here's to three more majors with unexpected winners (like say Milos in Paris?).

A great display of tennis. And fun and gut wrenching to watch. Some matches are like close basketball games. You can analyze all you want, but really comes down to who wins a handful of points. That match turned on about 3 or 4 points IMO.

Tons of players responded. Don't wanna list them all, so the ATP website will do it for me!

The WTA players lounge in St. Petersburg had the match on too

Raonic's injury really hurts this week. We went from almost certainly walking all over the Brits to needing some big performances. Tough place for Shapovalov to be put in, but I think he did well, all things considered. Pospisil is doing his part so far in the second match.

Yes sir, he certainly did - Vasek takes out Kyle Edmund in straight sets (6-4, 6-1, 7-6(3)) to level the tie at 1 point each.

All respect to Vasek for his resilience this afternoon to force the tie to a deciding rubber. His post-match comments were very touching, too. I hope the video gets posted soon.

Whoa. Denis Shapovalov drilled the ref with the ball...and he had to default.
I've never seen anything like this before.

Context? On purpose? He slammed it in anger and it accidentally hit the ref? Completely incidental?

He was going for the crowd, I would assume. Massive profile bump coming, not the way he would want I imagine.
