Will Zary play his way into the Calder conversation?
Only rookie that is a PPG. Nobody besides Bedard is playing at above a .78 ppg clip.
Can gain the zone with ease, makes quick smart plays, has skill and speed, has energized Kadri to play his best hockey as a Flame.
He's been talked about a lot in other threads but I believe he deserves his own. What a start to his NHL career.

Zary gave Bedard a 7 game head start but is coming in hot. Love what he’s bringing to the Flames!

Actual chance to win? Nope

Bedard might have a 35-50 goal rookie season as a bonafide 18 year old. He's tracking to have one of the wildest rookie seasons in history.
The only conversation is if Zary could end up potentially second in Calder voting

My personal definition of being in the conversation would be getting voted into being a finalist or expected to be a finalist.

Would take some work.
Also might require Bedard sitting out a few games.

No such thing as a Calder Trophy nomination: all rookies, within the definition of a "rookie", are eligible for votes.

I think in a month he will be a part of that conversation, but entering the season we all knew it was Bedard's trophy to win unless he got hurt.
Gaudreau was a finalist in 2015. I think you have to go back to Phaneuf in 2006 before Gaudreau. I guess the Flames are due for another one in 2024, so why not Zary? I would be very happy if Zary ends up as a finalist.

He’s gotta play at a high level for a lot longer than 8 games before he’s in the Calder convo.
That’d be great but I won’t be surprised if he cools off. Happens to a lot of young guys. Season is a grind. Playing off adrenaline for the first 20 games is great, then a few bounces don’t go his way and he hits a cold streak.

I'd be a lot more concerned about that applying to other people on that list than Zary, who has played two seasons of AHL.
If Zary keeps this up then he will definitely be in the conversation. I could be mistaken but I think everyone else on that list had the benefit of making their team out of training camp.

Same with every NHL award (I unreasonably hate the way people say nominee or finalist).

Same issue. There’s no “finalist”. There’s a top 3 but the votes are already done, all at once.
