Nah the Penguins already had three goalies. Nedeljkovic will back up Jarry.

SJ is retaining $1.5M of Karlsson’s salary. And Pitt is retaining 25% of Petry and paying a few other pieces to Montreal to dump him.

We will see if Karlsson stinks it up again on a new team after an extended courtship and media hyping, as happened after the move from the Sens.

Great summary of the deal on capfriendly. Pitt comes out with over $3M of additional cap space, SJ loses 2.2M and the Habs lose a little less than a million

Wow one of the worst contracts in the league and come out with 3 million in cap space.

I like this deal for the Pens. Good move given the clear direction in PIT to go for it.

It's a good move but when you are a defenceman being paid 11 million and you absolutely suck at defending well that's a problem.

Dubas/PIT did great.

San Jose did not.

Montreal makes out like bandits as the 3rd team.

interesting to look at it team-by-team.

PITTSBURGH
+ Karlsson, Pitlick, Hamaliuk, 2026 3rd
- Granlund, Petry, Rutta, DeSmith, Legare, 2024 1st, 2025 2nd

SAN JOSE
+ Granlund, Rutta, Hoffman, 2024 1st
- Karlsson, Hamaliuk, 2026 3rd

MONTREAL
+ Petry, DeSmith, Legare, 2025 2nd
- Hoffman, Pitlick

think it works for all teams, given what they set out to do. I don't agree with Pittsburgh's decision to mortgage their future for "going for it" with Crosby and friends, but I do think this could have gone much worse for them. Adding Karlsson, dumping Granlund/Petry and picking up 3m in cap space, without having to give up one of their better prospects? That's not bad. Sure, a 1st and a 2nd, but they were always going to give that up here. Giving up Rutta and DeSmith won't break them, neither does Legare (who hasn't produced in the AHL). Hamaliuk is probably a bust, but maybe a change of scenery helps.

San Jose, I don't really like it for them. Depends on whether they can flip Granlund and/or Hoffman, maybe with retention. Same for Montreal and Petry. Generally like this deal a lot for the Habs.

Kinda suprised there are only 4 years left on Karlsson's deal...time flies.

If we spin back one year, the assets spent by PIT are essentially:

1st 2024 (Top 10 protected)
2nd 2025
2nd - 46OA 2023 (Granlund)
Matheson (Petry)

Rutta and DeSmith were signed as UFAs. PIT also gets a 2026 3rd from SJ which could be pretty high and conceivably cancel out the 2025 2nd.

I wish the Flames did business this way. Take some risks and really really good or really really bad. Tired of playing it safe and finishing 17th.

For PIT, it could be 4M in cap space if Pitlick is sent down. And if things work out the SJ 3rd they acquired won’t be far from the 2nd they gave up.

I would suggest that is the plan of well run organizations.

The 1.5 mill of retention actually makes Karlsson a lot more palatable imo

Add in that they got rid of granlunds $5 million a year contract and it looks good for Pitt. Granlund was a waste of $5 million .
