Hahaha what a terrible way to decide such an important game. Who enjoys this?

The shootout ruins another gold medal game.

Shootouts suck. Such a stupid way to decide a championship.

Bummer to lose in a SO but otherwise an excellent game. Canada really didn't do enough with their shootout chances as they just shot the puck and Lundqvist only had to maintain position.

Should have played OT 4 on 4. No one scores after 1 period of 4 on 4 go to 10 minutes 3 on 3 and if it still isn't decided then have a shootout.

Or they could just keep playing 5 on 5 until it's decided. There's nothing wrong with that in the NHL at all. If they did it any other way, most people would not enjoy it as much.

Given the prevalence of soccer in these European host cities there is a entirely different opinion of deciding a game via shootout, given penalty kicks deciding games (I think)

I would imagine that is why it has existed in that format for long before it was in the NHL

Would be interested to see how international fans feel about this deciding a game, my guess would be its totally acceptable, maybe preferred

Nah, ending a best of 1 playoff match in a shootout has always been lame, even in football.

How about scoring more goals so that one team actually wins? Maybe there is some complacency and lack of urgency with the teams since they know they have a greater chance to win in a 4 on 4 or shootout situation. The NHL should do away with overtime and shootouts in the regular season,if there is a tie both teams get no points. Why put in the extra effort to win a game when one has loser points as a gift anyways?

With soccer at least it makes some sense, by the end of the game you have already played 120 minutes and can only make 3 substitutions, by that point you need to break the tie somehow.

In hockey with the ability to play 4 lines and with the intermissions they should at least be able to play 2 OT periods. I do get that they have to carve it off at one point but a 20 minute OT is just not enough IMO.

if the NHL started today they would have shootouts. It's just that they played 6 overtimes in 1936 so it's tradition and they can't go back. I'm sure tv today does not like long overtime playoffs games and may put pressure on the league to change it one day as ratings go down.

If you're watching a game as a neutral, as it goes later you're probably going to bed. But if you knew that there would be a shootout in about 20 minutes you'd stay up for it.

Look, I know you don't like OT or playoffs in general, but having such an important deciding game have the match outcome determined with a gimmicky thing like 4v4/3v3 OT or shootout would completely ruin the postseason.

Also, why would anyone watching as a neutral go to bed but stay up for a skill contest? Who actually does that?

The best/most memorable playoff games are the ones that go on forever.

I'm a hockey fan, not an accountant at a TV network, so I don't really care what they want. I'll be happy if tonight's game goes to midnight (as long as Nashville wins).

Sure, it could (and probably will) happen that they'll go to shootouts for financial reasons, but that'll be a sad day.

I prefer endless OT to shootouts as well however it gets tiring seeing the exact same comments after every international elimination game decided by a shootout.

Those have been the rules for as long as I can remember and I don't think they will be changing any time soon.

Yeah, everyone knows the rules when they get there and that's just how international tournaments go. It sure sucks to lose, but I didn't feel Canada got ripped off yesterday.

On the other hand, I'm sure I'll still be whining in 2018 on the 20th anniversary of stupid Robert Reichel's goal.
