Default Maple Leafs hire Kyle Dubas as AGM. Poulin/Loiselle gone.

It's certainly a hire to be jealous about.

Jealous that the Leafs picked up a good AGM, and jealous that a 28 year old is an AGM.

Dubas is a superstar. Reputation as incredibly smart guy. He's 28, grew up around the Soo Greyhounds.

Awesome hire by the Leafs, unfortunately.
Dubas took over the Sault Ste. Marie Greyhounds and him and his coach, Sheldon Keefe, ran things using a strong analytics - or advanced stats - base. Their progression: 10th, 9th, 6th, 2nd.
From the other thread...

Keep in mind this is junior hockey. That progression is pretty much how it works unless you are 'high/illegal' spending team or inept.

That 2nd place is also really 4th... they just played in a bad division and got the 2nd seed. They were well behind London/Guelph/Erie in points in their conference. (They got swept by Erie in the 2nd round who was the 3rd seed)

He seems like a good hire and he can definitely talk the talk. But there isn't a ton of evidence to suggest he's going to be great or even good yet.

Forgive me if I'm not exactly sold on him as a Superstar based on junior accomplishments alone.

I think his days are numbered. This can't be a Nonis hiring, as a guy who is so against analytics.

Sure it does as Nonis is just simply keeping the seat warm until Dubas gets up to speed.

I would assume it's a Nonis hiring. Certainly not a Nonis replacement waiting in the wings. If you take his age out of the equation, Dubas isn't all that remarkable. Certainly makes a good support piece though.

I dont know, that article states that hes been the GM of the Greyhounds for 3 years, which at his age is pretty remarkable.

Greyhounds have been a bit of gongshow for a while. Dubas gave them some stability but it wasn't looked at as a great hire when made initially.

Outside of being hired young and throwing around analytics a lot what makes this guy a superstar hire or something to be jealous of?

I am not sure if he is good or bad but based on his track record there is nothing in terms of actual moves/roster building to indicate he is a superstar.

Regardless of whether he's good or not, being the GM of a WHL team at 25 and then an AGM of an NHL team 3 years later at 28 doesn't make you jealous?

Not jealous of the Leafs, jealous of Dubas.

For him it seems like a good deal but others have said he is a superstar GM and we should be jealous of the Leafs.

He was also the youngest ever certified NHL agent, at age 22.

Apparently he was the AGM in the Soo when he was 14 years old?!

He's obviously a very sharp guy but that alone doesn't make for absolute success. The biggest obstacle to any Leafs GM is the market and media pressure. Every little move or non-move is so overly scrutinized that it's simply hard to operate like GM's in other markets. If you draft too many American players you have to deal with Don Cherry blasting you on TV. There's drama every time a highly drafted player gets sent down to the farm. The fact that fans and local media overrate roster players so much makes it hard to make trades that look in your favour even if it's a solid swap. The fact that a lot of good players simply don't want to play in that market to face the daily drama and scrutiny of the market.

IMO it's by far the hardest job in the league and there's a reason so many GM's have come and gone with little or no success. The fact that Burke even had them on the right track is a huge positive IMO as I don't see that team ever winning a cup in my entire lifetime.

If the Leafs are grooming him to replace Nonis (which I sincerely doubt) I think that is a big mistake. Three years in junior does not an NHL-GM resume make.

I would think they would bring in someone to replace Nonis and let Dubas mentor under a better GM for a term.

THEN he might be ready.
