Default Jarome Iginla and 5 other players who will never win a Stanley Cup

Quote:
Jarome Iginla was always supposed to win a Stanley Cup.

Capable of scoring 50 goals and defending his ice in the process, he was championed in 16 seasons with the Calgary Flames despite an inability to lead the franchise to one.

Most believed the 37-year-old would get his moment. Heck, he'd earned it. And it appeared that he was well on his way.

Iginla demanded the greenest of pastures when he departed, making stops in Pittsburgh and Boston, but his path to a championship was derailed on July 1. He signed a three-year, $16-million deal with the Colorado Avalanche.

The lucrative decision ensured he will never get his name etched onto hockey's chalice, but in the end, it was his to make.

Here are five players who aren't so lucky.

I think Colorado is on the cusp of a big run. They kind of remind me of the pre-cup Chicago Blackhawks. I think the fact he did sign for 3 years will improve his chances. Even if it's as him piggy backing on the backs of Duchene, Landeskog, and Mackinnon

Really now, it's not like he signed with Florida. The west is tough but Colorado will at least be in contention over the next 3 years.

30 (soon to be 32?) team league. Many great players will never do it.

All things being equal, a team can only expect to reach the finals every 15 years, and win the Cup every 30 years.

I dunno. With the talent on that Avs team, who are only really missing a piece or two on defence, how exactly can you write them off in the next three years? Talk about making assumptions. If he thinks the 'top teams' won't change over that time he may be in for a surprise.

Unfortunately I disagree. They'll be in the mix, but based on the moves right now I see the West being dominated by Chicago, LA, Anaheim and St. Louis for the foreseeable future.

I think Iggy made a mistake. In my own humble and ignorant opinion he should have played the mercenary on cheap 1 year deals until he won the Cup and then settled somewhere and earned his $16M.

I honestly believe he could have had both but settled on the sure thing.

Statsny out Iginla in makes them a worse team...very unlikely they will win the cup.

you never know but I just don't see it, 30 teams its hard to win a cup thats why 04 stings so badly

I'm not even sure the Avs are even a sure bet to be in the playoffs let alone a contender. I really wish Iginla went with LA or Chicago, I don't think the Avs are anywhere close to either of those 2 teams in the next 2 years. Year 3? Maybe, but then they got a 40 year old guy making $5.5M (?) which could really hurt... that could be an anchor of a contract that prevents them from getting that top pairing defenseman, which is just as hard to get as the No 1 C.

And, again, if all Iggy wanted was $16M he could've stayed here and gotten $16M or more.

He could have stayed in Boston, a legitimate contender, for 2 mill.

Jarome's time in Calgary had come to an end. I don't think he wanted to be in the rebuild.

Not to nitpick the article, but it says "Luongo came closest to winning a Stanley Cup, but he's the furthest of the bunch now"

I guess 2004's Game 7 of the SCF doesnt count for Iggy.

Well, the Canucks were three games up on Boston. They were one win away for four games...so I'd say Luongo was closer than Iginla

I agree that Colorado wasn't the best choice as a Cup contender, but they are FAR from the worst choice and it wouldn't necessarily be a surprise to see them win in the next couple years, but it would be a tough go.

If he really wanted the cup he could have signed 1 year 1 mil with an LA or Chicago ala Brad Richards, but Iggy doesn't have the benefit of a 60 million dollar buyout (or whatever it was).

Stupid article is stupid. Colorado may not be a favourite, but they can certainly be in the mix in a couple years. Mackinnon started off relatively slow and eventually dominated on most nights.

Take into account all their young studs being more mature and are fired up to be playing with Iginla. Lets not forget that Iggy has been an allstar since many of those guys were kids. I'd rather have that guy on my team then Stasny who peaked at 22.

Also take into account that Iggy signed onto a team that can afford him, where as Boston, L.A, Chicago ETC can't sign him to 15mil over 3 years. Colorado had the cap space and has the potential.
