Did I miss something in which McCarthy has been in?
Because she has been awful when I have seen her in SNL, Bridesmaids (everything was awful about that so tough to blame her) and that awful Mike and Molly sitcom.
But as Troutman said Phoenix was best music act and I thought they were once again a terrible music act on the show maybe I am just getting too old for the guests on SNL.

What the hell was that? That one was bad even by bad SNL standards.

Half of the new cast members bring absolutely nothing to the show.

I think girls like her because she's not gorgeous and slim, and therefore she doesn't bring out the physical insecurities of other girls.
If there's a legion of guys who like McCarthy, I don't know who they are.

I thought she was okay last week but her first performance on SNL was great. I've never seen a woman do such unrestrained, physical comedy. It's just something they seem to leave to the boys. I thought her salad dressing scence was just as good (if not better) than Farley falling through the coffee table.

SNL this week was a steamy pile of ####. So many flubbed lines. Weekend update was the only bright spot and it was still a solid 'Meh'. The Thatcher tribute was okay as well.

Ya, you can tell it was a forgettable episode when 2 days afterwards, people here are still just talking about the episode from the week before haha. I watched the whole thing and I'm having trouble remembering a single sketch, aside from when Vaughn & McKinnon were sucking on each other's noses.
I agree that most of the newer members leave something to be desired. I see legit big potential in McKinnon, she reminds me of a younger, unpolished Wiig. I'm beginning to really like Killam too. Outside of that though, I'm not overly impressed with the rest yet, maybe it will change with time. I especially am not a fan of Cecily Strong, she seems like the type who can only do "girl humour".

May 4th - Zach Galifianakis, Of Monsters and Men
Zach's monologue last time was one of the best ever.

The biggest problem with the show is honestly the writing, and while that does go to the cast members, the cast members can only execute what the Writers do.
In the past SNL especially in the early years had incredibly strong counter culture writers. I think now they have pretty bread and butter comedy skit writers. The fringe edgy comedy worked really well in the old days because a lot of the laughs came from shock and not being predictable.
Now the comedy is predictable and you see the same line of skits as you see in the average 30 minute sitcom.
I think the cast is decently talented, not compared to 20 to 30 years ago, but the writing is terrible.

I think the structure of writing everything in 2 or 3 days in the week before the show is part of the problem. I know they have to be topical, but there is no reason they can't be writing non-topical skits all year around.
The writing environment is also very political. It is a competitive atmosphere where writers and performers push to get their stuff on. It is safer to keep bringing back repeat characters than try something different or edgy.

Splitsider seems to be written by and for hipsters into comedy writing so I'm not sure why I read it all the time. It doesn't seem to reflect my tastes.
Here, Splitsider panned the monologue whereas it was praised by HuffPo. Splitsider liked the amnesia theatre and weather channel sketches while HuffPo did not. Both loved the history of rock segment and both hated the prom sketch. Comparing the two reviews is always interesting and underscores that different audiences have different tastes.
