Bourque USED to be a very, very good 2-way player. I remember him killing penalties and having him line-match against the better lines in the league - though by that time we are speaking of in Anaheim, he was the frustratingly inconsistent player.
Also, that penalty.. IIRC, didn't Bourque break his stick, and then held onto it for a long time, including when a guy was going to check him and he held it out almost like a spear, and getting called for it just then? Was that the same game, or am I remembering it wrong? One of the most stupidest things I have ever seen an NHL player do.
He didn't hold it out like a spear when someone came at him, he just didn't let go of it after it broke for some reason. I don't think anyone was near him when the penalty was called. It wasn't even that long, I'd say it was less than 10 seconds he had it in his hand.
Bourque got hurt and then started playing scared and that's what killed him.
@tsnjamesduthie: Sean Monahan and CGY visit ANA in 20 minutes on #TSN. Monahan has points in his first 5 games. Last player to do that: Jonathan Toews.

He'll never be a Toews. He's Sean '####ing' Monahan!
