Flames, Stars make sense as potential landing spots for unsigned Jaromir Jagr

The 45-year-old forward remains unsigned but has shown little desire to hang up the skates

Anyone else get the feeling like these guys could probably sign somewhere, but have a high asking price? I remember hearing something about Jagr still wanting $4M.

Yeah, probably looking for some combination that gets them to a higher figure that would hold things up. Small salary but lots of achievable bonuses etc.

Jagr has an outstanding invitation to play for the Florida Everblades in the ECHL.

I doubt the Everblades can pay him $4 million/year though.

But NHL teams with bigger wallets can. So he'll be patient.

Yeah, there was a report that Jagr wanted 3.5M. I don't think any GM is in a rush to give him that money and will wait until the price is right.

I think we'll see 3 things happen fairly soon; Bennett signs his deal, Stajan is traded to the pens, one of Jagr or Iggy signs with the Flames.

Then the dominoes start to fall....

For Iginla that sounds about right... for Iggy it's got to be more about fit. He won't sign with just anyone for that small an amount... Iggy has the money he just needs to fill that Stanley Cup sized hole in his resume.

Jagr would take more. He's a better player at this point, could easily play in the KHL/Extraliga if he wanted, has nothing left unaccomplished in the NHL.

I don't think Stajan needs to be traded to fit Bennett and one of Iggy or Jagr on the team cap wise. I do think Stajan has one last job with the Flames which is preparing Jankowski for the show. Stajan is the most referred to veteran when young players talk about the guys that helped them the most as rookies breaking into the league.

Having said that if Pitt is willing to send a pick and take the contract off our hands it has to be done. If they plan to bring him in as a Bonino replacement and centre the 3rd line that is a better opportunity than he will get in Calgary where he is at risk of being the 13th forward.

At the same time, depending on what comes back or if the Flames are willing to retain, the Penguins probably don't want to handcuff their team for someone like Stajan.

They have 6M in cap space, roughly, and still need to sign Conor Sheary. It's doable, but Stajan isn't the type of player you grab if it's going to bring you that close to the cap.

Nothing left unaccomplished, sure. However, Jagr is close to some very big numbers that I would assume he would prefer to reach before calling it quits in the NHL, especially given his performance in the last couple of seasons. Some of these he can (or even should) hit in this upcoming season, and the rest he can hit if he plays two more seasons.

  • 57 games played will push him ahead of Howe (1767gp) for the all-time most games played in the NHL. Not to mention that along the way, he will pass both Messier and Francis in doing so.
  • 38 goals will push him past Howe for the 2nd all-time spot in goals scored (Gretzky is at 894 - 129 goals more than Howe, and that is most likely out of reach for Jagr)
  • 100 assists will push him to 3rd all-time in the NHL. That might not be reachable for him in two seasons, but he is 21 assists from passing Bourque for 4th all-time, and 44 assists from passing Messier for 3rd all-time.
  • 86 points from hitting 2000 points. He won't pass anyone along the way, but 2000 points would probably be something anyone would love to hit when they are in striking range.
I am sure there are probably more along the way that aren't as obvious. I know if I was him, I would love to stay in the NHL and try to hit some of these before I call it quits. He loves the game, he is a fitness freak, and he is still a decent player by any metric. I am sure money matters to him, but I would also imagine finding the right fit considering those numbers above would probably be just as important. I hope he signs somewhere in the NHL, and as a fan of hockey, I hope to see him hit as many of those as possible.

I wouldn't know the numbers exactly, but having Smith, Lack (and for a short time Stone) salaries all be retained to some extent would probably make ownership more agreeable on retaining salary on one of our own players for trade.

Stajan's cap hit(#3.125m) is higher than his actual salary this season ($2m) anyway so half of that shouldn't be a big dent.

LOL - lucky if the Everblades even have a couple million in revenue for the year. Anything more than a couple hundred thousand would be unmanageable for an ECHL team.

I dont think Jagr is taking his talents to the ECHL when at worst he could make millions in the KHL.

My point being that it's not just the love of hockey that keeps him going, it's also a paycheque.

That being said, he is more than likely looking to break some NHL records, so the KHL is also not a good option for him.

Imo both Jagr and Iggy should be begging the Flames for a deal. They potentially have a spot open on the right side of their top line that boasts one of the best young duos In the game today. Not only that the team has 3 solid options at centre (maybe 4 with Jankowski) and arguably the best blueline in the league. On top of that they have a fairly player friendly coach (who Jagr has experience).

For Iggy it is one last ride with the team he got the closest with and remains a Franchise icon.

For Jagr it is a chance to play a significant role in a Canadian team which is an experience he has yet to have in the NHL.

The Flames roster is pretty crowded when healthy especially considering they think Jankowski and Foo will push for spots. I see no room at all for Iginla, hard to fit him on the top 3 lines at all considering his pace and defensive play at this point in his career. Is he going to come here as a 4th liner PP specialist? Seems unlikely. Jagr? Maybe if you can get him on a deal but it sounds like he's priced himself out of that.

I think they'd be just as happy to go with what they've got as is. It's hard enough to fit all the players we've already got when healthy if you seriously think Jankowski and Foo are on the cusp.

Janko and Lazar need to play, IMO. Possibly Foo as well (Foo too?)

The only way I would look at signing Iggy and/ Jagr would be if we could ditch Brouwer and/or Stajan:

Gaudreau Monahan Jagr
Tkachuk Backlund Frolik
Ferland Bennett Iginla
Versteeg Jankowski Lazar
