It's not surprising to me that people will complain about anything, but I am always amused by the sheer variety of loosely related reasons they'll give for complaining about it.

Switching to LEDs only makes sense if you have a very large building. Going from the T5 to the LED version of the T5 will save us $8k per year in lighting costs. And Manitoba Hydro pays for the replacement.

But on the home side? Would be a better idea to just slightly subsidize the LED lights people can buy if you really want them to use it instead of subsidizing all the stuff mentioned in the OP.

I read somewhere the consultation is free but you have to pay for the materials and man power. Anyone read that somewhere?

That's not how it sounds:
  1. Fill out the form to register.
  2. You’ll receive a call to schedule your installation, and a second call from the installer the day prior to their visit.
  3. An installer will visit your home, and conduct a walkthrough to identify potential opportunities for energy-efficient upgrades at no charge.
  4. The installer will upgrade your home to energy-efficient products, and show you how to use them. Most installations don’t take longer than an hour.
  5. You’ll save money and conserve energy—immediately. And the products are yours to keep at no charge!

I have most of that in my house, except for the fancy thermostat AND the faucet aerators (we had our plumber "illegally" give us the regular ends because I can't stand the low flow taps... or showerheads).

Looking forward to my free thermostats.

It's okay, you'll more than pay for it in ongoing taxes anyhow.

Great.
Do you think this Ontario company is going to fly in people from Ontario to screw in light bulbs or something?

This is some Green Party level stupidity though. I don't mind collecting a carbon tax but this is a dumb thing to spend it on. I agree with whoever that maybe they could subsidize expensive green home appliances and fixtures but this seems like a waste.

Also low flow shower heads are garbage.

Hey, it may be a vote buying initiative, but why not participate? It's done, it's there, and the money allocated to the program will be spent regardless if you refuse to participate because you feel it's of no benefit. As your typical CP'er, I'm just happy to finally qualify for a government program

And, although 10 LED lightbulbs in one house doesn't do anything for the individual, it will be interesting to look at power usage stats for the province pre-program and post-program.

Edit...And yah, I'll either be refusing the low flow or quickly replacing them if I can't. I like to shower, not "mist"...

You have got to be absolutely kidding me. Seriously?

I want to see the Cost/Benefit breakdown on this.

Crap like this floors me. All of the savings on tiny crap like this amounts to nothing!

What a serious misallocation and straight-up waste of time, money and resources.

Lightbulbs and Thermostats? They cant be serious. Does whoever okayed this program even own a home? Do they have any concept of the infinitesimal savings this would produce at best?

Based on the Canadian Electrical Code, any electrical installation, modification or alteration must be performed by a qualified electrician. Imagine if your house burns down because of a new bulb. The government would be 100% liable for not having an electrician performing it.

Are we seriously at the point of paying electricians to change light-bulbs? Is a light bulb really electrical installation? Maybe we get reservoir engineers or geologists to fill up my tank.

Ahem, back in my day at the full service station we liked to call ourselves Petroleum Transfer Engineers.

What kinds of products are included?
LED lightbulbs
LED nightlights
Faucet aerators
Low-flow showerheads
Advanced power strips for audio-visual equipment
Smart thermostats

No way on that one, that's almost as bad as low-flow toilets...

I want to keep my industrial strength showerhead!

Hahah what no it doesn't.

There are even caveats in the code that you change out your own switches/receptacles and light fixtures without a permit/electrician, let alone changing a bulb.

I'm happy to be getting some free LED tubes for my garage at some point. I have four sets of lights in my garage and replacing each tube with LED would have been costly.

It's ok, because there is carbon tax on that CO2, which pays the environmental cost to get the guys driving around, the government pays the cost of these guys driving, with the money going back into the socialist state of Ontario, and the cost is put back on Alberta taxpayers. Don't you see? It's the NDP logic! Somewhere in this NDP process the environment is saved, but anti-Earth people just cannot see it of course.
