When I worked at Suncor, and we were back in the office. Managers LOVED booking meetings to get everyone together and I swear it was to justify being in the office 100% of the time.

The meetings were often redundant, and more often than not turned into a bitch fest about how ####ty morale is.

Less meetings for the win. Spend time doing actual productive stuff rather than talking about it.

Too many meetings is definitely related to poor management or poor process - usually both. And “too many” is usually a number much lower than most people expect. Time is literally money when your rates are measured in hours instead of outcomes, so I always make sure meetings have at least as much value as the loss in billables they cause.

I’m thankful to be in a much higher position where I have controlling influence over how, why, and when meetings happen, but I will never forget years ago at a previous job having a partner tell me I had to hold weekly meetings with my team, as it was part of my job as a team lead. Not just, you know, managing my team effectively, but holding a physical meeting every week… just because.

Hardly surprising that company went under.

WTF do they do it in the house? No one was ever allowed to smoke in our house or cars although some tried. Are your brother sister-in-law childless?

Nope, they have two kids. They insist the vapour is harmless.

Maybe, but I was thinking more about the stench. I’d hate to live there.

My neighbours smoke weed constantly. But seemingly not together. One will be in the backyard and one will be out front in their garage. Smells like skunk.
Thankfully for their kids they dont seem to smoke it inside the house. Just the rest of us in the cul de sac have to deal with the smell.

This will sound judge-y, but I don't care: parents should not be smoking weed at home with children around (including in the backyard/on the porch).

What about drinking wine or beer?

Wild how many people still just old school style smoke it in public in 2024 when there's so many other, much less stinky methods. There's bath bombs and a chap stick now for jebus sake. Smoking doobies and smelling like that when you have young kids is just trashy.

I like weed, but my kids - at 16 and 18 - have not once seen me smoke or vape in their entire lives. I don't know how or why (probably just a hangover from its illegality), but it just seems worse than drinking alcohol in front of them.

The other crazy thing is I think alcohol is so much more destructive and unhealthy than weed, and I find people intoxicated on alcohol to be a bazillion times more annoying than people high on weed.

I thought I may relax my self-imposed hiding of smoking/vaping from my daughter when she turned 18 recently, but in fact, I just can't do it.

They have seen my wife and I drink THC drinks.

But anyway, yeah, I hear you. Something feels wrong about it.

In moderation, I don't have a problem with drinking. My first sip of wine was at home at probably 12 or 13, but my parents didn't drink very often.

It's a good question, though. Alcohol can be very destructive to young lives.

There's something visually about smoking that tips it over the edge of acceptance, I guess. Tabaco is pretty harmful but at least it won't turn you into a zombie like excessive bong hits will.

I'll admit personal bias here, though. I've heard a lot of anecdotes about weed ####ing people up and witnessed it a couple of times. I do know one alcoholic and that's not pretty either, obviously.

The wine and beer consumption concern is, I think, behaviour modeling?
The secondhand smoke is an issue around kids, and others, as well as modeling.
Secondhand beer though...eeew

In your first post you mentioned the parents were seemingly aware enough not to do it right in front of the kids, which is presumably for both reasons. But at a certain point, in their tweens probably, the kids will realise what's going on. Second-hand smoke might not be a concern but that's setting a bad example for impressionable kids.

It's interesting to me because "our" attitudes around it are different from our kids. I have two the same ages, and I still think of the illegality of it. My 18 year old and her friends have almost no interest in drinking, and they just use weed.

We’ve been having BBQs and parties with our circle of friends and our kids since long before pot was legalized. Even though we often drink to excess and things can get boisterous, anyone who smokes pot slinks off to a garage to do it surreptitiously. This has continued after pot was legalized.

There’s still something about smoking pot that feels skeevy. When we have parties we do discretely drink THC drinks when the kids are around (they’re all teenagers now) without any fuss. But even there it’s not really open like the booze is. I’ll tell the kids I’m going to the liquor store to grab some beer. I don’t tell them if I’m grabbing some gummies.

I don’t know why we still have a double-standard. Probably generational.

A part of the fun of getting stoned is sneaking off to do it.
