The one that gets me is Panarin, some scouts had him as high as a 2nd rounder but no one drafted him thinking he would never leave Russia, if there's ever one to waste a 7th round pick on it was him.

This is literally what the Flames did back in the '80s. If there was somebody decent that they weren't sure would come over, they used a late pick on them to grab their NHL rights just in case.

I remember hearing or reading somewhere that most teams thought that 12 rounds were so long, and they sometimes had trouble accommodating so many prospects. Some teams would draft players that they never thought would come over just to avoid having to deal with so many kids.



Did I dream this up somehow? For the life of me, I can't exactly remember where I picked this up from (and it was probably 20 years ago that I heard it).
