Default Solar Plant Incinerates 28,000 Birds Every Year:

Quote:
Solar energy may sound like it’s great for the environment as a whole – but it appears to be deadly to our feathery friends.
Right now tens of thousands of birds are being accidentally incinerated as they fly through a solar power plant in California’s Mojave Desert.
The surprising and horrific deaths are occurring at a rate of one every couple of minutes since the Ivanpah Solar Electric Generating System opened back in February of this year,
https://ca.news.yahoo.com/blogs/geek...210118559.html

"Green" energy has significant costs to the environment as well. We all remember the outrage when 1600 ducks were killed in a Syncrude Oil sands tailings pond in 2008. They were subsequently fined $3 million dollars.

Apparently there are 10 plants similar to this one in the US. Should they all be paying fines of tens of millions of dollars?

or you could feed the homeless. Pre-cooked, albeit maybe a bit overdone. Sad thing is this won't even be a blip on news media outlets.

Sure they should.

However since it's in California, and it's renewable, they likely won't be touched.

They could probably cut it down substantially if they used noise cannons like the mine operators.

71 different species found so far. There's gotta be meat on one of them!

We should reduce dependence on Solar and focus on Wind energy...oh wait, they kill birds too.

We should reduce dependence on Wind and focus on Nuclear...oh wait, that messes up the environment when they have an accident.

We should reduce dependence on Nuclear and focus on Tidal energy...oh wait, that kills sea life too.

We should reduce dependence on Tidal and focus on...coal? Oil? What's left? Back to the stone ages or bust I guess.

That is an insane number of birds. I like the idea of a sonic fence or something though.

Bald eagle replicas will do the trick.

Either that, or get a BBQ and make some delicious grilled gull for lunch.

That's quite pessimistic. There's lots of better and better ways to harvest energy and we can keep minimizing the effect on the environment. The end game on renewables is infinitely better than fossil fuels, so it's kind of a false dichotomy here when comparing acute impacts vs long term ones

We're doing a film project and spent a lot of time talking to owners, naysayers, etc. down in Pincher and area.

Very few

Home windows kill much more.
