Iceland is so scenic, even the air-travel-destroying volcanoes are pretty.

One of our geologists is optimistic about it not disrupting much this time:
Quote:
20:56 - Kristján Jónsson, a geologist with the Icelandic Institute of Natural History, has said that although he cannot confirm it, he expects the ash from this eruption will be coarser than that of Eyjafjallajökull in 2010, meaning it may not effect the aviation industry as heavily. “The Eyjafjallajökull eruption was a mainly rhyolite eruption, with a mix of rhyolite and basalt,” Kristján told RÚV. “The ash from that kind of eruption can be very different from the kind of eruption that occurs when mainly basalt comes up from under the glacier. The ash that came from Eyjafjallajökull was much finer and lighter, like flour that hung in the air much longer and travelled further.”

I wouldn't, this could subside still, although all signs point to an eruption. Last time it was only 5 days of air travel disruption, if this goes in the next few days by the time you have to travel I would think you would be safe.

So cool, 15 years of earthquakes and eruptions, shows you really nicely the mid atlantic ridge and how it goes through Iceland.

BTW, how is this related to Berlusconi's Bunga-Bunga parties? There must be some connection, given the Bunga...

Just a quick update, last few days saw some of the biggest quakes in the area, one as high as 4.7 and about 5km deep, then this morning we had quiet for about 2hrs, and since about 11am (2hrs) a large swarm of 3.0+ richter hit.
Iceland MET office says "intense seismic swarm continues, no signs of magma reaching the surface yet"

But they sent out the coast guard helicopter and the Bombardier Dash 8 is going up to see if this is it.

Eruption! Small one so far, just under Dýngujökull northern part of the large Vatnajökull glacier, under about 300m of glacier ice.
Aviation code has been turned to red, no fly zone is being issued. Flood warnings are already out for the possible affected area.

aaannnnnd false alarm. Now its being reported NO VOLCANO.
But now more activity from the 10km caldera, the biggest 5+ richter hit yesterday there which is raising alarms.
I'll update if something happens again.
