Patrick Stewart has one of the better ALS Ice Bucket Challenge video's. I enjoy seeing people dump water and challenge others, but this is the real reason it's being done.

Our company did the challenge, trying to get companies challenged since they can contribute a lot of money, ours donated around $1000 USD to the local ALS charity in Iceland.

Which is why it's brilliant marketing... even Joe-Schmo likes to have people looking at him so he feels important. People like feeling important. Couple that with now they are a part of something that even the celebs are doing and BAM.... Everyone and their dog is going to do it. Im actually surprised I haven't seen someone ice bucket their dog yet.
That's such a cynical view. I don't like being the center of attention at all, but I was challenged by my cousin yesterday. I'm going to do it so I'm not a stick in the mud that kills the momentum of this very good campaign. I'll also be donating as I think most people do.
What's not to like about this? I'd rather watch these videos than most of the other crap I see in my feed.

Agreed completely. The challenge just recently hit my circle of friends, so I know it's coming my way shortly....it's almost inevitable.
My niece out east just did it earlier this week. She's only 12 and was clearly doing it for the social/peer pressure aspects, but during one of our video calls she asked about ALS and wanted to understand it.
We spent the next half hour googling stuff together and getting a bit more educated. THAT is why this initiative is so great. The short term bump in donations is terrific, but its the long-term awareness that can (and hopefully will) make the big difference.

I'm in the same boat. I was challenged by my neighbor's 10 yr old kid yesterday, so obviously I have to do it. I really hate any kind of attention, and the fact that my wife is probably going to post it on facebook annoys the hell out of me. But it's for a good cause, so I'll dump some cold water on my head and write a check.

You're a good man for doing it. I think that one of the (likely unintended) side benefits is that it forces people to come out of their shell, be a good sport, and just let 'er rip.
We (including me...) take ourselves far too seriously. This bit of public humiliation is a great way to remind ourselves that there are much, much more important things in the world.
I wonder how long this ALS thing is going to last. I have a feeling I maybe up for it within the next week or so since I've a couple buddies who just did it. Maybe I should just donate now so I don't have to do the ice bucket challenge.
