The Glenmore Reservoir opens up for fishing on May 1st!
http://www.albertafishingguide.com/l...more-reservoir
Not too sure how many anglers are on here, but just a heads up. Seeing as I don't drive and love to fish, taking a bus out to the Glenmore Reservoir or fishing the Bow River are pretty much my only options. Can't keep anything from the Bow this season, but the Reservoir limits are still the same as always.
Fun fact: you can actually rent a canoe for the day from the Calgary canoe club for $35, right at the docks on the north side. I'd wait till warmer weather for that. Really fun though.
Anyway, yey fishing.

That Resovior always brings back great memories. I used to race on that Resovoir in regattas at the Calgary Canoe Club. I never knew fishing was permitted. I've never seen anyone fish in Calgary.

Do you fly fish or use spinning rods and reels at the reservoir?
What kind of fish do you hope to catch?
Canoeing was mentioned, but if you fish from shore, what are some spots to fish at?

I spent the last summer fixing up my old Laser. Looking forward to getting it out to Glenmore again! I used to do the Wednesday night thing back in around 2000 but I think traffic to get there would just take to long these days.

Just thought that I'd mention that if you're fishing for pike, early May can be a great time! Especially in the shallower bays where the water is a little warmer and before the hot weather really sets in. And if you're a fly fisherman, pike on the fly is awesome and it's popularity is slowly growing.

We are going to head out on our kayaks, seems like a good place to start fishing in the city for some pike. Slava, do you suggest using spoons and such for the pike or something else? Rapalas?

I guess you don't use the Bow River pathway much? I see people fishing in the river regularly.

Spoons would be alright (five of diamonds for Pike is good) and Rapalas are awesome...if you can consider spin fishing awesome! I would recommend a fly rod and some streamers for pike and then enjoy them hammering them.
I know that Pike fishing might not be as well thought of by a lot of "serious" anglers who only want trout in these parts, but fishing top water for Pike (spin or fly) is pretty exciting. You see your lure moving along the top and then a swirl as the pike is agitated and going to hit it! It's pretty good, and you can get some big Pike around southern Alberta, and of course most of the really good fishing doesn't open for a month and a half.
If you're going and haven't gone for Pike before, bring along some forceps or needlenose pliers. They have teeth and you want to keep your fingers away if you can avoid that!

They should open it up to boating as well. That would be sweet although packed on weekends. Screw those non-motorized guys.

Yeah for sure, we could all use a little gasoline, and motor oil, in our drinking water reservoir.

I had no idea you could rent a Canoe for the day - that sounds like a great time. Not sure I'd take it out for fishing, but heading out the water for the afternoon is certifiably worth the rental fee. Thanks for the info!

It is already full of poop and piss. A little oil and gas won't hurt anyone.

That's great info, thanks a ton for this.
If this weather ever gets around to improving, I'll be out fishing for sure. I live really close to the reservoir and really enjoy it. Some nights it's easy to forget you are in a city of 1Mil+ people when fishing the SW corner. Really really nice to have easy access to it.
