I know lives were lost but lucky for the Fitz it was a glancing blow or it could have been far worst.

How does a US military vessel with all that tech get hit by a very non-stealthy ship in calm waters? Someone has some explaining to do.

I know it takes some time and space to maneuver these vessels, but wow, how do you hit another ship?

The Commanding Officer will be held responsible no matter what the result.

It would be one thing if they had wanged off of the front of the Freighter, but a whole other thing in that they went off of the back of it and it looks like a turning collision.

I'm wondering if the Fitz was running EmCom and lights out and cut it too close.

Would that be more likely part of an exercise or an actual mission?

I don't know, it could be either. Commanders tend to run drills based on opportunity.

Maybe he saw the freighter and saw an opportunity for a drill.

Maybe he was sleeping and whoever had the watch played cowboy.

Only gross incompetence can lead to this happening.

One would think.

Enormous and fairly slow-moving vessels dont tend to get that close to each other on the open ocean.

This situation reminds me of this old joke:

Americans: Please divert your course 15 degrees to the North to avoid a Collision.

Canadians: Recommend you divert YOUR course 15 degrees to the South to avoid a collision.

Americans: This is the Captain of a US Navy ship. I say again, divert YOUR course.

Canadians: No. I say again, you divert YOUR course.

Americans: This is the aircraft carrier USS Lincoln, the second largest ship in the United States' Atlantic fleet. We are accompanied by three destroyers, three cruisers and numerous support vessels. I demand that YOU change your course 15 degrees north, that's one five degrees north, or countermeasures will be undertaken to ensure the safety of this ship.

Canadians: This is a lighthouse. Your call.

Vice Adm. Joseph P. Aucoin was asked if damage on the starboard side indicated the U.S. ship could have been at fault, but he declined to speculate on the cause of the collision. Maritime rules suggest vessels are supposed to give way to ships on their starboard.

The Fitzgerald is salvageable, he said, but repairs will likely take months. "Hopefully less than a year. You will see the USS Fitzgerald back," Aucoin said.

Looks like the senior officers and the top enlisted man have all been relieved of duties (no big surprise there)

The actual Navy report is below - sounds like a harrowing experience and the crew did a remarkable job getting as many out as they did.

Trump responded to shouted questions about collision of the USS John S. McCain with "that's too bad," according to pool.

maybe time to change the title of this thread to "Ongoing US Battleships Playing Bumper Cars" or something like that.

I am still trying to imagine how two slow moving large vessels with radar and multiple people scanning the horizon for other objects manage to hit each other.
